Koenig is District 6 Player of the Year

After helping lead her team to one of the best seasons in program history, Norwalk senior point guard Abby Koenig was voted as the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association District 6 Player of the Year for Division III. Coaches from the district voted on the teams on Feb. 16. Koenig averaged 14.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 3.5 assists in 24 games for the Truckers. She also shot 79 percent from the free-throw line. Koenig is also one of three players in program history to break 1,000 career points (1,058). Joining Koenig on the first team were sophomore Emmie Leber and junior Trinity Lazzara. Leber averaged 15.2 points and 7.6 rebounds per game this season. Lazzara averaged 10.3 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 2.1 steals per contest. First-year coach Kyle Brubaker was selected as the Div. III Coach of the Year. The Truckers finished 22-3 overall and 9-1 in the SBC Lake Division. They shared the league title with Bellevue, marking the first league championship in program history. Norwalk's 20 wins in the regular season are also a program record, while the 22 overall wins are good for second-most in program history. The Truckers also reached a district title game for the fourth time in program history. In Div. V, two Willard juniors, Reese Bedingfield and Cam Wiers, were both selected to the first team. Bedingfield averaged 14 points and 9.7 rebounds for the Crimson Flashes. She shot 61 percent from the floor and 81 percent at the free-throw line. Wiers added 8.4 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game. Classmate Corrin Gettys (10.3 points, 4.9 rebounds) was voted to the second team. Edison senior Ivy Kluding (8.9 points, 4.1 rebounds, 2.5 steals) also landed a spot on the second team. Second-year coach Alanna Bedingfield earned Coach of the Year honors. She guided the Flashes to a 17-8 record and a second-place finish in the SBC Bay Division. Willard also reached a district title game after it started the year with just eight players. The Flashes then lost Reese Bedingfield to a season-ending injury in the second-to-last game of the regular season. Clear Fork senior Melodie Blubaugh (18.5 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 3.8 steals) was Player of the Year. In Div. VI, Monroeville senior Grace Stieber was also a first-team selection. She averaged 12.5 points, 4.1 rebounds, 3.3 assists and two steals per game. Stieber helped the Eagles to a 13-9 record, including a 10-4 mark in the FC. She is the single-season record holder for 3-pointers in a season (47, 2024) and in a career (119). Earning spots on the second team was the New London junior duo of Valery Henry and Gracie Thomas. Henry averaged 9.1 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.2 steals per game. Thomas averaged 9.6 points and 8.1 rebounds per contest. Honorable mention choices in Div. VI included Monroeville senior Julia White and freshman Sophia Stieber; and New London junior Olivia Yetter. The Div. VI Player of the Year was Gibsonburg sophomore Elly Evarts (22.8 points, 8.1 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 5.0 steals). Colonel Crawford's Zach Bauer and New London's Eric Mitchell shared Coach of the Year honors. Mitchell just finished his 12th season at New London. The Wildcats started the season with six varsity players and finished with five. Still, New London went 14-0 in the FC for the second straight year to win back-to-back championships. The 'Cats also won a sectional title in Division VI and finished 18-6 overall. In Div. VII, Plymouth sophomore Kendyll Tolbert (10.6 points, 3.2 rebounds, 3.2 assists) and St. Paul junior Morgan Endsley (9.1 points) each were selected to the second team. Honorable mention in Div. VII included St. Paul sophomores Aubrie Bogard and Ella Kalizewski; and South Central junior Emily Lamoreaux. Tiffin Calvert's Alyssa Rishty (23.1 points, 6.1 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 4.5 steals) was Player of the Year, and Seneca East's George Parks was Coach of the Year. In Div.
