Monroeville sweeps Western for first time in 39 years

MONROEVILLE — Host Monroeville dominated the final three quarters in a 50-36 win over visiting Western Reserve in a Firelands Conference boys matchup between two streaking teams Thursday night. The Eagles won for a fifth straight time to improve to 12-6 overall and 8-4 in the FC. The Roughriders had entered the game having won five of their last six, but fell to 7-10 overall and 6-6 in the conference with the loss inside the Monroeville Athletic Complex. Derek Ackerman broke out for 25 points — half the team's total — to pace the Eagles. Blake Ackerman added nine points. Monroeville is at New London (2-16, 1-10) Saturday in another FC matchup and hosts Edison on Monday in a rescheduled game. The Roughriders got 11 points from Chase Hipp in the loss. After scoring 13 points in the first quarter, Western was limited to nine points over the second and third quarters as a 16-13 deficit ballooned to 36-22 entering the final eight minutes. Also for Western, Caleb Pausch had seven points and three assists, while Hayden Keith had four points and 11 rebounds. Western Reserve hosts St. Paul (14-5, 10-1) Saturday night.
