Local Democrats elect new leader

NORWALK — The Huron County Democratic Party has a new leader and is looking forward to facing the changing political landscape. The Huron County Democratic Party elected Loretta Nichols as party chair at its executive committee meeting last Wednesday, Jan. 29, according to a news release. Nichols succeeds Karen Prelipp, who stepped down from that post and her seat on the board of elections after serving four years. Janette Robertson is slated to claim Prelipp's former position on the board of elections. The party also elected Katie Hicks of Clarksfield Township as the party's second vice chair. Councilman receives award Norwalk City Councilman Matt Doughty was presented with the Leona H. Weisenberger Award in appreciation of his "selfless and dedicated service to Huron County," Doughty was honored to receive the award and looked forward to a change in the direction of the local party. "I am deeply honored and humbled to receive this award," he said. "Since joining the Norwalk City Council, my goal has always been to ensure that our city remains a responsible steward of taxpayer dollars while continuing to serve its residents with dedication and pride. Being recognized for these efforts is truly meaningful to me." Doughty recognized some challenges and solutions Democrats would face in the changing political atmosphere. "One of the most significant challenges facing the Huron County Democratic Party isn't opposition —it's the disillusionment of those who have lost faith in our mission. "Grandstanding has led us nowhere," he continued. "It's time to roll up our sleeves, engage with our communities, and create real change. That's exactly what we're doing here at the local level—let's hope the state and national parties follow our lead. "
