Koenig caps historic weekend with 1,000th point

OAK HARBOR — One night after helping secure the program's first league championship, Norwalk senior guard Abby Koenig further etched herself among the best in the history of Truckers' girls basketball. Koenig scored 19 points to reach 1,011 career points in her career to help the Truckers to a 46-42 win over host Oak Harbor (15-5) Saturday afternoon. That win tied the mark for most wins in a regular season, set just two years ago at 19-3 in the 2022-23 season. Koenig, who also had 10 rebounds and five steals, is the third player in program history with 1,000-plus points. She joined 2017 graduate Jiselle Thomas (2,023) and 2006 grad Megan Sellers (1,393). Norwalk (19-1) — which saw its double-digit lead get threatened late — also got 12 points and 14 rebounds from Emmie Leber in the win. The Truckers host Mansfield Madison (7-12) Tuesday before its huge rematch at Bellevue (19-1) to end the regular season Saturday. The Truckers beat the Lady Red, 41-38, in the first meeting. Western improved to 6-12 overall and 5-8 with the win. Layken Barnhart scored nine points, followed by Maylee Wetzel with eight and Ally Goebbel with seven. The 'Riders host Crestview (9-8, 6-4) this Friday and visit Plymouth (5-14, 4-9) on Feb. 13. St. Paul (2-18, 1-11) got 11 points from Morgan Endsley in the loss. Aubrie Bogard added seven points. Willard (14-6, 7-1) kept its hopes alive for a share of the league title with the win. The Flashes host Huron Tuesday before ending the regular season at Margaretta (16-4, 9-0) on Thursday. The Polar Bears won the first meeting, 36-30, on Jan. 4 in Willard. In Saturday's win over Edison, Corrin Gettys had 20 points for the Flashes. Reese Bedingfield added 14 points and Weaver scored nine. Edison (9-11, 1-8) got 12 points from Taylor Moore and eight from Ivy Kluding.
