NMS, Norwalk Catholic junior high teams compete

NORWALK — The Norwalk Middle School seventh grade girls basketball team cruised past Sandusky by a 57-16 score Monday night for an SBC Lake Division win. With the win, the Truckers improved to 5-4 overall and 2-3 in the Lake. All seven players contributed to a season-high points total in the win. Brynn Sellers led the team with 16 points and Londynn Clifton had 13. Kalli Oates added eight points, followed by Stella Kipp with seven. Lillian Kipp (6), Alivia Darovich (4) and Layla Koch (3) rounded out the scoring. The two NMS girls teams will host Tiffin Columbian on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the NMS boys visited Sandusky in league play Monday night. In the eighth-grade game, the Truckers (1-8) fell behind 17-2 in a 58-13 loss. Aiden Kahn and Konner Ruble each had four points, while Lyric Shipp scored three and Brady Ream had two points. The seventh-grade Truckers also fell to the Blue Streaks, 53-37. Blake Muskovich had 24 points for Norwalk (5-4), while Jacob Tyler scored eight. Landon Waite added four points and Ryker Crumrine had a free throw. The NMS boys teams travel to Tiffin Columbian on Wednesday. In junior high basketball action for St. Paul, the eighth-grade team defeated Crestview (45-7) and Western Reserve (58-21) around a 43-26 loss to New London. The seventh-grade boys lost to the Cougars in overtime (47-46); beat New London (39-20); then fell to Western Reserve (38-33). The junior high teams play at Mapleton on Wednesday. The St. Paul junior high girls teams also split a pair of games. The eighth-grade team beat New London (32-9) and lost to Western (38-14), while the seventh-grade girls beat New London (23-13) and lost by a point to the Roughriders (24-23). WRESTLINGTruckers, Flyers compete at NMS The NMS wrestling team recently placed seventh at its host 19-team Invitational on Jan. 11 at the Middle School gym. The Truckers had five placers, which included Nolan Naseman earning second at 122 pounds. Naseman went 4-1 with four victories by pins on the day. Oscar Avila placed third at 160 and Ben Marett finished fourth at 134. Liam Marshall (98) and Titus Roth (110) each placed fifth for NMS. St. Paul placed 12th in the team standings and had a pair of placers in 205-pound champion Abel Couch and runners-up Brady Coetzee at 172. Couch pinned all five of his opponents — four in under a minute — with his longest taking just 1:15 of mat time. Coetzee was 5-1 with three pins and lost by decision (7-0) in the finals. The Flyer wrestlers also recently competed at the Mohawk Invitational, where Couch finished in first place with a 4-0 record. Coetzee was second with a 4-1 mark, and Mike Stieber was third, also with a 4-1 record. At the Vermilion Invite, Stieber was 6-0 and Couch finished 4-1. The Flyers also recently participated in teh Clyde McPherson Invite on Jan. 4, where Couch was second with a 3-1 mark and Coetzee was fifth at 2-1.
