Three area champions at Edison Invitational

MILAN — Host Edison was the highest-placing team among three area schools at the Edison wrestling Invitational on Saturday. Medina Buckeye (205) won the team title going away, while Clyde was runners-up with 190 points. Edison scored 143.5 points to place sixth among 13 teams, while Monroeville (135.5) was seventh and Western Reserve (98) was 10th. The area had three individual champions, led by the host Chargers with two. Mason Hermes won the 113-pound weight class, while Cy Finnen did the same at 215. Hermes opened his tournament with a pin in 40 seconds over Monroeville's Landon Grosswiler. He won by technical fall, 21-2, over Buckeye's Zack Simmons, then pinned Clyde's Landon Bailey (5:14) to each the finals. Hermes then finished off his title with a 17-0 technical fall over Oregon Clays Blake Madson, followed by a 7-2 decision over Clyde's Heath Norris. Finnen pinned Medina's Aaron Tyson (:32); Clay's Jacob Purtee (1:14); Elmwood's Logan Evans (2:31); and Bryan's Logan Carder (:27) to reach the finals. He then capped his tournament with a fifth pin over Buckeye's Justin Augustine in 1:33. Also for Edison, Xander Gfell-King was second at 126. He had four pins to reach the final, where Port Clinton's Joshua Cornell won by a 6-2 decision. Quentin Cox was third at 132 for Edison, while AJ Crabtree (113) and Joel Smith (285) were both fifth; and Urijah Ojeda (106) and Kamden Horvath (132) both placed sixth. Monroeville had the third area champion in Brencyn Evans at 190. He pinned Buckeye's Preston Ware (1:23) and Elmwood's Vincent Allen (:49) before getting a forfeit win over Margaretta's Cohen Gahler. In the finals, Evans won with a 13-1 major decision over Clyde's Hector Garza. Also for the Eagles, heavyweight Brycen Dunlap was second at 285. He had three pins and a decision before falling in 3:12 to Buckeye's Cliff Nicholson in the finals. Both Landen Roeder (150) and Landin Hershiser (165) were each third for Monroeville, as was Owen Patchen at 126. Ian Patchen placed fourth at 175. For Western Reserve, both Landen Barnhart (144) and Drake Munroe (157) were runners-up. Barnhart had three straight pins before winning a high-scoring 19-17 decision over Port Clinton's Jace Cornell. He was pinned in 1:24 by Elmwood's Peyton Schafer in the finals. Munroe had four straight pins before a 14-5 major loss in the finals to Clyde's Mason Holden. Placing third for the Roughriders was Anthony Lierenz (120) and Jaxson Davidson (157), while Riley Lutz (126) and Tristin Maxwell (175) both placed sixth. Norwalk runners-up at Madison MADISON TWP. — The Truckers opened the season with a second-place finish at the 21-team Tom ellis Classic at Mansfield Madison on Saturday. Marengo Highland won the team title with 294.5 points, and Norwalk was next with 255.5 points. South Central (197) tied with Shelby for fifth place. "Last year we got off to kind of a slow start, and that definitely was not the case yesterday," Norwalk head coach Erich Metzger said. "All of our kids went out there and battled hard. "I couldn't be prouder of this team to place second in a tournament with that much talent. Being down two starters and two open weight classes really shows the depth and grit of this team." Norwalk had two individual champions and eight total placers, led by Nick Toth at 144 and Anderson Evans at 175. Toth started his tournament with a 22-4 win over Shelby's Mason Koch. He pinned Green's Tyler Grant (4:28); won by default over Calvert's Isaac Mullins; then pinned Kaden Voughn of Bucyrus (:34) and Northwest's Preston Volk (1:46). In the finals, Toth won by technical fall over Loudonville's Brady Smith, 16-0. Evans pinned Fairview's Henry McAleer (2:37); won by technical fall over Van Buren's Drew Phillips (18-2); pinned Cardington-Lincoln's Wyatt Denney (1:29) and Remington Baker of Highland (:40); then needed just 1:34 in the finals to pin Madison's Gavin Cupp. Placing second for the Truckers was Nico Helton (165) and Cooper Gee (285). Landon Knoll (113), Aldynn Metzger (120) and Kevin Howard (190) each placed fourth, while Victor Negante (132) was with. "They are going to be really fun to watch throughout the season," Metzger said of his team. "It's really hard to call out one standout. We saw so many great things and so much great wrestling. Every one of our wrestlers had their moment and really left everything on the mat." South Central had six placers and also had a pair of individual champions in Wyatt Martin (106) and Diton Farnsworth (120). Martin pinned his way to five victories. He started with 25 seconds over Shelby's Sean Nolen; then only 31 seconds over Highland's Bradon Lehman. He followed with pins over Northwest's Dylan Shingleton (:39); Highland's Bryden Bisbee (:54); and Sandusky's Jordan Conway (2:27). Farnsworth pinned Fairview's Maxwell Edwards (6:00); Wooster's NaSean Handley (:54); then won an 11-6 decision over Norwalk's Metzger before pinning Highland's Brady Byler (3:43) in the finals. Also for South Central, Cole Frankart (144), Dixon Blanton (157) and Alex Hamons (190) each placed third, while Justin Gillum (150) was sixth. Thomas Winegardner (113) and Ben Trimmer (138) won their weight classes for the Big Red. Winegardner pinned New London's Tyler Kidd (:32); Hillsdale's Tyler Coleman (1:49); then won by technical fall over Hillsdale's Barrett Duncan (16-0). Trimmer pinned Canton South's Caden Seitz (2:55); won by technical fall over River View's Aaron Seiler (21-2) and Wooster's Wyatt McElroy (15-0); then won by major decision over Ridgewood's Aadon Slaughter (16-4) before a 7-5 decision over Northwestern's Blake Good in the finals. Also for Plymouth, Noah Robinson was second at 285, while Hunter McClure (175) was third and Zach Miller (157) was fifth. Isaiah Miller (165) placed sixth. For New London, Hunter Chandley won the 165-pound weight class with four pins and a major decision. Chandley started with a pin over Lexington's Brayden Vance (2:34) and Canton South's Desmond Young (2:37). He pinned Vance again in 1:56, then did the same to Plymouths Isaiah Miller in 2:56. Chandley then won 8-0 over Ridgewood's Gabriel Lamneck, then finished with a third pin over Vance in 2:34. Also for the Wildcats, Oliver Harrison (190) was second, while Zach Collins (150) was fourth. Aaron Shay (215) was fifth, and Frederick McCully (138), Jayden Bracken (144) and Keith Squire (175) each placed sixth.
