Weiss lifts Willard over Upper Sandusky

WILLARD — Leah Weiss scored on a layup with 1.8 seconds left to lift the Willard girls basketball team to a season-opening 38-36 win over visiting Upper Sandusky Tuesday night inside Robert L. Haas Gymnasium. It was the only basket of the game for Weiss, and came at the right time for Willard, which trailed 13-11 after one quarter but led 19-17 at halftime. The Rams (0-1) then outscored the Flashes 14-9 in the third quarter to take a 31-28 lead, only for the Flashes to rally for the win in the fourth quarter. Reese Bedingfield led all scorers with 15 points for the Flashes, while Emelia Tallman added nine and Corrine Gettys scored eight points. JUNIOR HIGH NMS teams open season NORWALK — The Norwalk junior high boys basketball teams hosted Edison in their season opener Tuesday night. In the seventh-grade game, the Truckers led 17-2 after one quarter en route to a 48-32 win over the Chargers. Blake Muskovich led the way with 34 points, while Jacob Tyler had eight points; Landon Waite scored four points; and Jose Benavides added two points. Edison grabbed the early lead in the eight-grade game and posted a 42-23 win. Meanwhile, the seventh-grade NMS girls team traveled to Edison and fell, 44-17. Brynn Sellers and Stella Kipp each scored four points for Norwalk. London Clifton, Alivia Darovich, and Lillian Kipp each added three points. The team is back in action Monday at Tiffin Columbian.
