Teen's death ruled homicide

FINDLAY — Circumstances behind the killing of a teen during a police pursuit last month are still unclear. What is known, however, is that the Lucas County coroner ruled 17-year-old Kalvin Darapheth's death a homicide. According to a press release from the Lucas County coroner, Darapheth died from multiple gunshot wounds. The press release did not include how many gunshots Darapheth suffered from, or where he had been hit. Darapheth was shot while running from Findlay police after they were dispatched to Bernard Park for suspected underage alcohol consumption in October. He was pronounced dead at a Toledo hospital the next day. Findlay police Chief James Mathias said an ongoing criminal investigation is inhibiting police from releasing any footage from the incident, but has said two Findlay Police Department officers are on paid critical incident leave pending an official investigation and that a gun was recovered from the scene. "I will be letting all media outlets know the correct timing of any release of (body worn camera) footage," Mathias said in response to a public records request filed last week. "But not this week." As of now, it's not clear if Darapheth was the one who shot at police first, but no other suspects have been identified by Findlay police, though they said three juveniles had been involved. Mathias also said the results from the autopsy would be sent to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations, the organization leading the investigation. A public records request filed with the BCI has yet to be fulfilled. The family raised $5,324, about half of their goal, from an online fundraiser. The fundraiser is no longer active and a funeral service for Darapheth was conducted earlier this month. Findlay Mayor Christina Muryn said she is hoping to have a press conference Thursday, though information on that has not yet been released yet.
