Edison to face Eastwood in Clyde

COLUMBUS — A familiar opponent and venue awaits the unbeaten Edison football team in the third round this Friday. The Ohio High School Athletic Association announced the football regional semifinal playoff pairings and neutral sites for the third round of the playoffs, set for 7 p.m. Friday across the state. The first team listed in the pairings is the designated home team. A team's regional seed, state rank and overall record do not factor into neutral site locations. Among the 16 teams left in Division V Region 18 is the top-seeded Chargers (12-0), who will face No. 5 Pemberville Eastwood (11-1) at Clyde High School's Robert J. Bishop Jr. Stadium. Edison joined the Sandusky Bay Conference in 1986 and played Clyde on a yearly basis through 2016, including playing at the Fliers' home field every other season. Returning to Bishop Stadium also may be a good omen for Edison. It's last visit came in 2016 in a 28-24 loss to the Fliers. The Chargers went on to win their region and appear in the state semifinals that season. As for Eastwood, the Chargers hosted the Eagles just last season in the second round and posted a resounding 38-7 win in Milan on what proved to be the final game played on natural grass at the venue. In that same 2016 season, Edison also beat Eastwood in the second round, a 28-7 win played in Fremont. The Chargers — ranked No. 4 in the final Associated Press state poll — advanced to Friday with a 42-21 win over Wooster Triway last week in Milan. They also blasted Johnstown Northridge, 42-0, in the first round. The other regional semifinal is also a rematch at No. 2 Liberty Center takes on No. 3 Oak Harbor (12-0) at a site to be determined. The Tigers won the meeting last season, 45-14, in the same round. Eastwood's only loss came by a 31-27 score to the Rockets in Week 9 in a game that determined the Northern Buckeye Conference title on Oct. 18. Eastwood is making its 17th all-time playoff appearance in 2024. The Eagles are 21-16 all-time in the playoffs entering Friday with one regional title and a state runners-up, which came in 2017 when they fell to Wheelersburg in overtime. All 17 playoff trips have come over the past 23 seasons dating back to 2002. The results are similar all-time for Edison. This is the 11th appearance for the Chargers — all since 2003 — where they take a 19-10 playoff record into Friday's game. Edison won back-to-back regional titles in 2015 and 2016, and has won at least won round in the playoffs in four of their previous five appearances. During the first round, 45 lower seeded schools won on the road at higher seeded schools, and 11 of those schools won again on the road last Friday in the regional quarterfinals. The regional playoffs will follow bracket format. The regional finals are Nov. 22 and the state semifinals are Nov. 29. The state championship games will be hosted on Dec. 5-7 at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton. Also of note to the area, SBC Lake Division champion and AP No. 2 Perkins (11-1) faces Napoleon in a 1 versus 13 matchup in Region 14. That game will be played at Milbury Lake High School. Perkins head coach Jalen Santoro, a 2013 Bellevue graduate, also faced Napoleon as a player in the third round in 2012 in Findlay. That regional title game came after the Redmen had defeated the Pirates — at Clyde — in the second round on their way to the Div. III state runners-up. Also in Region 14, unbeaten Shelby (12-0) rematches with Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference rival Ontario (11-1) at Arlin Field in Mansfield. The Whippets, who scrimmaged Norwalk on Aug. 16, beat the Warriors, 50-36, on Oct. 18 in Week 9 in Shelby. Meanwhile, SBC River Division champion Hopewell-Loudon (11-0) will face No. 4 seed Hamler Patrick Henry (10-2) at Findlay in a third-round game in Div. VI Region 22. Local venues will also entertain games. Bellevue is the site for a Div. II Region 6 game between Medina Highland (12-0) and Whitehouse Anthony Wayne (12-0), while Frost-Kalnow Stadium in Tiffin is the site for Toledo Central Catholic (11-2) and Lexington (7-5). All seven AP poll champions are also alive, including Mentor (Div. I), Avon (Div. II), Columbus Watterson (Div. III), Mentor Lake Catholic (Div. IV), Ironton (Div. V), Kirtland (Div. VI) and Maria Stein Marion Local (Div. VII). About neutral sites Neutral host sites receive a stipend from the OHSAA and also keep revenue from concessions, parking, 50-50 raffles and program sales. In addition, the OHSAA pays for the officials. Without schools being willing to host games, the OHSAA would not be able to use neutral sites. Many factors go into determining locations for each game, and rarely can a site be found that is exactly halftime between the two schools. Once a potential site is determined, the school must be available and willing to host a game on the requested night.
