911 call from Wakeman fire obtained

WAKEMAN — The Huron County Sheriff's Office has released the 911 calls received after a Wakeman house fire in the morning of Oct. 5. The fire claimed the life of Cynthia Jackson, 43, and her daughter Zoey Senghas, 12. Jackson's son, Brady, 7, climbed through a bathroom window to get out of the house when he then called 911 to request assistance, his father Nick Senghas wrote on Facebook. "My house is on fire," Brady could be heard telling a 911 dispatcher. "My mom's in the house and so is my sister." The dispatcher stayed on the phone with Brady until a woman who identified herself as a neighbor took over the phone. "Why is no one here yet?" the woman asked the dispatcher. "Honey, the fire department, the police department and the ambulance have all been toned out, but you live in a place where there's a volunteer fire department," the dispatcher responded. Three minutes and thirty-three seconds into the call, the woman says "It's OK, they're here." Brady's and Zoey's father, Nick Senghas, questioned Wakeman fire handling of the situation in a post on Facebook. He also said Brady's actions were heroic. "Lost in the tragedy of last Saturday's events is the heroics of this little boy who is just 7 years old. Waking up to the sound of the smoke alarm. Not panicking. He had the wherewithal to get out a bathroom window. Get the phone from his mother who threw it out the window for him to call 911, while she went to get his sister," Senghas posted. "While on the phone, he gave all the pertinent info. Location of the house and description of the scene. Upon the arrival of the first responders, you can hear him telling them the exact location of his mother. All while you can hear his mother screaming for help in the background. Yet they were not saved," he wrote. He then pleaded with his followers to request the 911 audio from the sheriff's office. "After you listen to the call," Senghas continued, "You decide if this is a situation where two people should have died. If you do not believe like I don't. Demand answers from the Wakeman Fire Department." The 9-1-1 calls were at 8:17 a.m. and 8:18 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5. Wakeman fire's press release says "This morning around 8:15 a.m. the Wakeman Fire Department was dispatched for a structure fire on Verlin Street in Wakeman." The report does not say what time the fire department arrived on the scene. Wakeman fire Chief David Wilson could not be reached for comment on Friday. However, in an interview after the fire, he said the family that resided in the Verlin Street home was "well known" to the fire department. That's because Jackson's father was a firefighter for 40 years. He has since passed away, but he took his daughter and her children to fire department functions over the years, he said. "That's why it's so tough," Wilson said. "Knowing the family." In a press release, fire officials thanked the following agencies who assisted with the fire: Huron County Dispatch, Huron County Sheriff's Office, Wakeman Police, Camden Fire, Townsend Fire, the Ohio Fire Marshall's Office, Citizens Ambulance, North Central EMS and the citizens of Wakeman who provided food and water, a Wakeman Fire District press release said.
