Roeder, Benfer lead Eagles

MONROEVILLE — Marsh Field lived up to its name for both the Eagles and Tigers on Friday night. With rain pouring down throughout the game, it set up a run-heavy offense for the Eagles in a 36-13 win to improve to 3-0. Monroeville struck first in the game. Midway through the second quarter, sophomore Colton Clark scored on a 14 yard touchdown run and Landon Stein added the extra point. Less than three minutes later, Monroeville scored again. The Eagles took advantage of the wet weather, with a fumble that set them up in the red zone. Monroeville chipped away until finally quarterback Evan Benfer pushed into the end zone on a 1-yard run for a 14-0 lead. After the Tigers (1-2) scored on a 61-yard pass from Nicholas Parks to Taylor Young, Stein connected on a 33-yard field goal. But Seneca East pulled within 17-13 in the third quarter when Bryler Beamer caught a 34-yard TD from Parks. But it was all Eagles from there. Benfer scored on a 19-yard run and a 42-yard run — sandwiched around a 12-yard TD by Landen Roeder as the hosts pulled away for the win. Roeder's TD came after Ethan Pomerich had intercepted a Parks pass attempt. The Eagles had also forced a turnover on downs prior to Benfer's final touchdown run. Roeder totaled 119 yards on 26 attempts, while Benfer ran 11 times for 89 yards for the Eagles. Clark added 50 yards on nine rushes, while Benfer was 5-of-8 passing for 63 yards. Four of those passes went to Clark for 53 yards.
