Humane society steps in

NORWALK — The Huron County Humane Society released additional details about animals that were recently found in filthy and inhumane conditions. Last month, the humane society executed a search warrant in Attica after receiving a complaint regarding the conditions of dogs on the premises from a concerned citizen. It is the only county humane society empowered to investigate suspected animal abuse in Huron County. The Humane Investigations Program is completely funded by donations. The 20 dogs and three cats located in the home were found in filthy and inhumane conditions and suffered from extreme fur matting. Because of the condition of the property and animals, the dogs and cats were immediately taken into the shelter's care and are receiving grooming and medical treatment. "Preventing animal cruelty and seeking justice for abused animals is critically important," said Amanda Fearing, the humane society's medical director. "Because of support from our community, we are able to remove animals from inhumane conditions, care for their needs and ultimately send them to loving homes." A probable cause hearing is scheduled to determine where the animals will be housed while the case progresses through the legal system. That hearing is set for 2 p.m. on Sept. 20 in Norwalk Municipal Court. Since taking in the animals, they have been cleaned up. Fearing said she did not know when the rescued animals would be up for adoption. "We were so grateful to all of those who reached out offering to assist with our severely matted dogs that need grooming," the humane society wrote on social media. "All of the matted dogs are now groomed and can move freely! Sarah Kieffer of Lady Paws did such an amazing job with these pups. We cannot say enough about her amazing work." Because of the high number of animals that have come into the shelter at once, the humane society is in need of donations.
