Norwalk second at P.C. doubles

PORT CLINTON — The Norwalk girls tennis team finished runners-up to Ottawa Hills on Saturday at the annual Coffin-Greer Port Clinton Doubles Tournament held at the Hablitzel Von Thron Tennis Center. Ottawa Hills scored 120 points to cruise to the team title. Norwalk was next with 63, followed by host Port Clinton (49) in the eight-team field. The Truckers had a pair of runners-up finishes at third and fourth doubles, and took third at fist doubles and fifth at second doubles. Shyla Gruhlke and Addy Rospert opened with a 10-0 win over St. Mary Central Catholic's Lauren Maxwell and Caitlyn Collins at third doubles. They posted a similar score over Port Clinton's Maya Klimentov and Lyric Jackson in the semifinals, then fell by a 10-4 score in the final against Hills' Loraina Guardia and Shivani Pindiprolu. At fourth doubles, Lydia Trost and Alyssa Gruhlke defeated Port Clinton's Lilly Hatt and Megan Zgodzinski by a 10-3 score. They topped Port Clinton's 'B' team of Keira Kilgallon and Lily Mincer by a 10-0 score, then were edged by Hills' Olivia Stumbo and Nikhila Navaneeth in the finals, 10-8. Ana Osborn and Eva Ott opened with a 10-0 win over Port Clinton's Kerynn Christiansen and Maddie Kopcak at first doubles, then fell to Hills' Taylor Kayse and Bryn Tangeman in the semis, 10-4. They beat Clyde's Claire Timmons and Grace Runion for third place, 8-0. Norwalk's second doubles team of Lauren Brown and Kenzie Smith lost to Hills' Hannah Chernow and Caroline Durfee, 10-6. They bounced back to beat Port Clinton's Rylie Budinger and Jaelynn Mazur, 8-2, then beat Clyde's Adriana Barnes-Ortmann and Jae Barrera by an 8-5 score to place fifth. The Truckers have a busy week on the road ahead. They visit perennial Division I power Perrysburg on Monday, followed by SBC Lake road matches at Perkins (Tuesday) and Tiffin Columbian (Thursday). Edison third at Pirate Invite PERKINS TWP. — The Chargers scored 50 points to finish behind champion Rocky River Magnificat (100) and host Perkins (80) on Saturday at the Perkins Community Tennis Courts. Liz Campbell and Ivy Kluding won the bracket at first doubles for the Chargers. The pair opened with a 5-1, 5-2 win over Mansfield Madison's Emma Reynolds and Kylie Carroll, the beat Huron's Brianna Miller and Rachel Merckens (5-0,5 -2) in the semifinals. Campbell and Kluding then outlasted Perkins' Ellie Manion and Katie Skavvnak in three sets, 1-5, 5-2, 10-7. At second doubles, Edison's Jenna Keoghan and Rowen Smith placed fourth. They beat Vermilion's Charlie Lopez and Lia Leimbach (5-4 (5), 5-1), then fell to Magnificat's Racheal Cahill and Elle Schaefer (5-2, 5-3). For third place, Keoghan and Smith fell to Fremont Ross' Jessica Thompson and Elayna Gray (8-3). The third doubles team of Isabella Wilson and Madison Ballah also placed fourth. They defeated Sandusky's Paula Rodriguez and Amya Johnson (5-1, 5-2) before falling to Perkins' Jacqueline Crawford and Anna Ferback (5-1, 5-3). For third, they were edged by Huron's Brynee Hartley and Emma Barnes, 8-7 (6). The fourth doubles team of Edison's Scarlett Bennett and Olivia Lizzi (Perkins) reached the final. They beat Bridgette Gooslin and Ruby Harger from Ross, 5-0, 5-4 (8). They then topped Madison's Raygen Rieter and Kalayah Johnson (5-2, 5-0) before falling to Magnificat's Maddie Arnoldand Charlotte McCauley (5-1, 5-2).
