Four area FC teams open with sweeps

COLLINS — The Western Reserve volleyball team opened Firelands Conference play with a three-set sweep over visiting Crestview on Tuesday. The Roughriders (3-1, 1-0) posted scores of 25-21, 25-18 and 25-15. Emma Hammond finished with seven kills and served 10 points for Western, which also got six kills from Payton Friend. Jamie Muenz finished 80-of-85 setting with 21 assists and served 11 points for the 'Riders, who visit St. Paul on Aug. 27. Also for Western, Makayla Case had 15 digs and Andrew Clemons added 13. Monroeville 3, Mapleton 0 ORANGE TWP. — The Eagles opened with an FC sweep over the host Mounties on Tuesday. Monroeville posted scores of 25-13, 25-10 and 25-9. Ady Adams led the Eagles at the net with 12 kids and also added four aces serving. Madi Reiber added five kills and seven aces, while Riley Platte had six kills and three blocks. Also for Monroeville, Addison Homan had 17 digs, while Taryn Tyler had seven and Grace Stieber added five. Addison Lyons had 17 assists and Kaci Poths finished with seven, and Alexa Adams served three aces. Monroeville won the junior varsity match in two sets, 25-5, 25-19. South Central 3, Plymouth 0 The Trojans improved to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the FC with Tuesday's win over the Big Red. South Central posted scores of 25-14, 25-13 and 25-9. Autumn Fry finished with 13 kills and four blocks, while Taylor Smith was 14 for 14 serving with four aces and 14 digs. Mya Inmon was 53-of-53 setting with 22 assists and was also 21 for 21 serving with six aces. St. Paul 3, New London 0 NEW LONDON — The Lady Flyers opened the season with a three-set sweep over the host Wildcats in an FC match on Tuesday. St. Paul (1-0, 1-0) posted scores of 25-17, 25-21 and 25-16 over New London (0-2, 0-1). Kegney Stoll finished 24-of-26 hitting with nine kills and three blocks for the Lady Flyers. Ella Kalizewski added seven kills and six blocks, while Brooklyn Cassidy had six kills. Shealyn Deeter added five kills and Aubrie Bogard had six. Kristin Matlack finished with 25 assists and Annie Friend added six. Lily Cuturic led the defense with 20 digs, while Kate Stieber had 10, Bella Guerra had nine — and Stoll added seven and Matlack had six. At the service line, Kalizewski was 16 for 18 with 14 points and three aces. Stoll added six points and Matlack had four. Norwalk 3, Edison 0 MILAN — Visiting Norwalk swept past host Edison for a non-league win on Tuesday. Norwalk posted scores of 25-14, 25-20 and 25-20 over the Chargers (0-1). With the win, Norwalk improved to 3-0 overall ahead of Thursday's challenging non-league match at Huron. For Edison, Jorja Byington had nine kills and seven digs, and Taylor Wlodarsky served 10 points with two aces and added nine assists and seven digs. Taylor Moore had 19 digs, with Ella Booth and Stella Brown each adding nine. Also for the Chargers, Macari Harris had four kills and three blocks, while Paige McFadden had eight assists. TENNIS Norwalk 5, Clyde 0 CLYDE — The Norwalk girls tennis won for a second time this week with a 5-0 sweep over the host Fliers in an SBC Lake Division match. The Truckers improved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the league with the win over the Fliers (4-2, 1-2). First singles saw Ana Osborn defeat Claire Timmons (6-3, 6-2), while Lydia Trost won in three sets over Grace Runion at second singles (6-1, 1-6, 10-7). Eva Ott beat Quinnela Kern at third singles, 6-1, 6-1. The first doubles team of Lauren Brown and Kenzie Smith topped Jae Barrera and Adriana Barnes-Ortmann (6-1, 6-2). At second doubles, Shyla Gruhlke and Addy Rospert beat Kenzlie Guhn and Ariah Farrar (6-2, 6-2). In junior varsity action, Norwalk came up a winner in all six matches. Alyssa Gruhlke won, 6-3, while Chloe Hazelwood and Roxy Brummit won, 6-2. Also winning for the Truckers was Brooklyn Younce and Aubrey Kluding (6-3); Nellie Ferguson and Vanessa Vazquez (6-1); Natalie Wiegel and Kinleigh Lesch (6-5) and Lily Ware and Lily McDuffie (6-1). Norwalk hosts Sandusky in another league match on Thursday at the Middle School courts. Edison 3, Willard 2 MILAN — Edison swept singles, including a three-set victory by Jenna Keoghan, to record a 3-2 win against Willard. Keoghan beat Willard's Emma Steinmetz at third singles, 6-2, 4-6 and 6-3. At first singles, Liz Campbell beat Belle Van Zoest, 6-0, 7-6 (5). Ivy Kluding also defeated Ava Deel at second singles in a sweep (6-0, 6-0). Willard won both doubles matches. The first tandem of Emie Buurma and Makenzie Sykes beat Rowen Smith and Scarlett Bennett (6-2, 6-3). At second doubles, Cora Clark and Evelyn Martinus topped Madison Ballah and Isabella Wilson (7-6 (2), 6-3).
