SATURDAY UPDATE: Authorities respond to fairgrounds

NORWALK — Several authorities responded to an accident that took place just before 10 p.m. Friday at the Huron County Fairgrounds. The accident occurred just before 10 p.m. during the Huron County Fair's Rough Truck Competition, according to Luke Tucker with the Townsend Township Fire Department, the department that was in charge of the accident scene. A truck participating in the event lost control and ended up hitting two people who were waiting to participate in the event, Tucker said. A person who identified himself as the driver of the truck wrote this on Facebook after the accident, "I was the one driving... nothing intentional. I lost (my) brakes and steering. I tried to steer out of it, and it wouldn't steer or stop. I feel terrible and hope everyone is OK." One of those hit was reportedly taken to Fisher-Titus while the other was taken by helicopter to a hospital. But it was not immediately known which hospital, according to Tucker. The names of the two people injured were not released, and their conditions were not known. However, Tucker said both victims were stabilized before they were transported. Tucker thanked first responders from New London, Berlin Township and the Huron County Sheriff's Office for their assistance at the scene. "I'm proud of all of our responders," Tucker said. "These are the type of scenes you can't hardly train for." Bob Morgan, Huron County's fair board president, declined comment when contacted Saturday morning.
