Former St. Paul teammates win bass fishing title

A recent St. Paul graduate and an incoming senior at the school teamed up to win the Bass Federation's Ohio high school state championship tournament on Aug. 11 on the Sandusky Bay. There were a total of 40 two-man high school teams from across the state who competed in the tournament. Each team weighed their five biggest fish at the end of the tournament, with the heaviest total winning the top spot. Kuhnle and Stieber, who were in their second season fishing as a team, totaled 16.71 pounds. That was more than four pounds heavier than the runners-up team. The pair also won the award for biggest Bass of the tournament, which weighed 5.92 pounds. Kuhnle and Stieber were football teammates who shared the same backfield for St. Paul. Kuhnle recently graduated and will continue his bass fishing and academics at Lander University in South Carolina, where he will study business and be on a fishing scholarship. Stieber is a senior at St. Paul, where he will be a key two-way starter and returning All-Firelands Conference player on the football team, which begins the season on Aug. 23 at Huron.
