Firelands EMS introduces and explains Blocker 51

Members of Firelands EMS (known locally as Firelands AmbulanceService) gathered behind the station in New London July 15 to introduce and explain Blocker 51. This vehicle was a fire truck that still looks like one but lacks the equipment to make it one. What is left is the shell and the engine of a 30-year-old vehicle that was recently purchased in Niles, Ohio, for $4,500. Its purpose is to keep people and equipment safe at crash and accident scenes by blocking off the road so other drivers cannot get too close to the scene. Firelands EMS Chief Jeff Scott said very few other EMS stations have a blocker, "but we're a progressive department." Also, used firetrucks like Blocker 51 are hard to find so the service wasfortunate to get one at a reasonable price. The blocker will be available to other safety services, and Fire Chief John Chapin said although this is a rural area the main highways carry Cedar Point traffic and accidents are not uncommon. Keeping firefighters, EMS and other safety workers unharmed is a top priority. Founded in 1978, Firelands EMS serves around 6,000 residents in the village of New London and the townships of New London, Fitchville, Ruggles and Troy.
