Edison baseball wins; softball falls on Monday

MILAN — Two high school baseball teams teams who will play in a district semifinal game later this week met on Monday in a tuneup, as state-ranked Edison scored all four runs in the bottom of the fifth in a 4-1 victory over visiting Ontario. Gabe Dymond and Abe Hermes each singled, then Tristian Wetherill drew. Walk to load the bases with no outs in the fifth. Marcus Medina then singled and Davin Wendt also walked to force in a run for a 2-0 lead. An error off the bat of Carson Smith allowed the other two runs to score. Three pitchers combined to allow an unearned run-on three hits for the Chargers. Bryson Wittmer went three innings with five strikeouts, two walks and no hits. Smith got the win with two innings of scoreless and hitless work and one strikeout, while Hermes went the final two innings and allowed an unearned run on three hits with a strikeout. Edison (18-5) — ranked No. 12 in the final state coaches poll in Division III — is the No. 1 seed will face No. 2 Oak Harbor (17-6) at 2 p.m. Thursday in a district semifinal at Shelby. The Warriors (14-10) are the No. 2 seed in the Fremont district and will face No. 3 Perkins (13-12) at 5 p.m. on Thursday. Audrey Linder had the lone base hit for the Chargers with a leadoff single in the seventh inning off Margaretta starter Cassie Lane. Starting pitcher Abby Cloud drew a walk in the fourth. In the circle, Cloud allowed six runs (four earned) on six hits with seven strikeouts and two walks in seven innings. The Polar Bears (20-10) face former SBC opponent Oak Harbor (24-2) at 5 p.m. Wednesday in a Division III regional semifinal at Findlay High School.
