Huzzah!

WILLARD — Willard Middle School students took a step into the past, dressed in garb from the 18th century and American Revolutionary War. On Friday and Saturday, eighth grade students participated in the 19th annual Revolutionary War Reenactment and Encampment. Students participated in reenactments of battles and events such as the Battles of Lexington and Concord, Bunker Hill, Valley Forge and the surrender at Yorktown. The reenactment also included living history stations and court hearings. Tents placed in front of the school campus acted as merchantiles, hospitals and others. Students demonstrated the home and daily life of minutemen and colonial citizens in the time period clothing with activities such as paper making, land surveying, kettle cooking, knitting and more. Actors were served dinner, complete with a ball to learn time period music and dances. General George Washington also made an appearance at the head table. Students were also recognized for going above and beyond in their history classes. Students who participated in and helped at Historic Lyme Village and who helped the reenactment as officers such as quartermasters, sergeants and color guard were recognized with medals, similar to military honors.
