Healing self heals theater

NORWALK — Some self-love could also mean helping the historic Norwalk Theatre. The Art of Healing, the first event of its kind hosted by the Norwalk Arts Center, focuses on self-care through workshops such as meditation, yoga, nutrition, massages and more. "The idea of it is to have an afternoon for anyone to focus on themselves," center president Dina Lukasko said. "Everything is so crazy busy. We're always going, going, going. It's so important to focus on yourself." She said the event is a gentle way to enable the participants to let go, be positive and self-reflect. She said it makes you feel more confident in who you are and more at peace with your mind, body and soul. Lukasko said all the proceeds go towards the restoration fund for the Norwalk Theatre. It's one of the big fundraisers for the restoration. The theater was originally built in 1941 and has been through several owners. "Around 2010 was the last time it was actually used," she said. "A couple of owners have purchased it so it wouldn't be demolished." Over the last five years, the arts center has been raising money to restore the building back to its original glory, or as close to it as possible, but have all the updates. She said the roof has already been replaced and the center is working on the marquee. "The next thing is the HVAC, the plumbing, the electrical," she said, which could cost millions in today's economy. Lukasko said they're hoping for the state to allocate money to the center from the appropriations bill. She said it's hard to predict when the theater's restoration will be complete. The event will take place on Saturday, June 30 from 12-4 p.m. at The Kilkerrin, 4391 Fitchville River Road in Wakeman. Vendors include crystals, tarot card readings, candles, essential oils, pottery, herbalists, nutritionists and more. "It's a free-flowing day. There's nothing structured. There's things going on all the time to go to if you want to experience a particular practice," Lukasko said. Want to go?
