Wells throws no-hitter in Norwalk loss

NORWALK — The Norwalk baseball team can't catch a break. The Truckers' Isaiah Wells pitched a seven-inning no-hitter — but took the loss after two unearned runs were the difference in a 2-1 SBC Lake Division loss to visiting Clyde on Wednesday. Wesley Shupe started and had a pair of walks and two earned runs in the first inning. Wells came on in relief and walked three with no strikeouts — but also didn't allow a hit in seven innings. "Isaiah has been been great out of the bullpen," Norwalk head coach Jason Higgins said. "He's earned himself more and more innings. He's been our most consistent at throwing strikes and pitching to contact. We're pretty confident when he's out there, and he keeps the game moving. "Today is probably the best defensive game we've had as far as making the routine plays," he added. "When the pitcher is throwing strikes, it's easy to get in a groove defensively. Landon Ferkel at shortstop was excellent, and our outfield play was great." Avery Scheel doubled for Norwalk, while Ferkel, Wells and Kaedyn Warner each singled. Clyde scored after a hit batter and two walks loaded the bases, followed by a fielding error and a fielder's choice. Norwalk got on the board in the fourth. Ferkel singled and Tanner Harp walked. Ferkel then scored on a wild pitch. Wednesday's loss was the second time in as many seasons that the Truckers no-hit a team — but lost the game. They met the same fate in 2023 against Ashland Crestview on the road. If the weather allows, Norwalk (1-5, 1-2) is scheduled to host Seneca East on Thursday; Tiffin Columbian on Friday; followed by a doubleheader at Huron on Saturday. "We just have to get over the hump," Higgins said. "We're playing pretty good baseball, but the games won't get easier, that's the issue."
