Flashes' doubles duos key win over Sailors

VERMILION — Willard's tennis team picked up a sweep at the doubles spots to propel the Flashes to a 3-2 SBC Bay Division win over Vermilion on Thursday evening. Masyn Johnson and Mason Dawson combined to take first doubles 6-2, 6-1. Braylon Long and Cullen Hill won at second doubles 6-1, 6-0. Monroeville (4-3) had a rally come up short in a loss to Boyd County (Ky.), then cruised to a run-rule win in six innings over Bay Village. Against Boyd, the Eagles trailed 7-1 entering the bottom of the sixth inning, but scored four times to pull within 7-5. Each teams traded runs in the seventh. Madison Reiber was 2 for 4 with an RBI, while Avery Rosser singled with an RBI. Veanna Helmstetter doubled and scored, while Abbi Poths added the fifth hit for the Eagles. Scheid allowed eight runs (six earned) on 13 hits with two strikeouts and one walk ins ix innings. Helmstetter pitched a scoreless inning with a strikeout. Against Bay, Helmstetter allowed just a base hit over six innings. She struck out seven and walked two and yielded a pair of unearned runs. Rachel Fries was 3 for 3 with a triple and an RBI for Monroeville, with Helmstetter also adding three hits and an RBI. Also for the Eagles, Rosser was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and Destiny Saam was 2 for 4 with four RBIs. Taryn Tyler added two hits and an RBI, while Poths singled with two RBIs. After an off day on Thursday, the Eagles finish the week in S.C. — where they are now 2-2 — with a 1:30 p.m. game on Friday against East Carter (Ky.).
