Eagles host Edison, St. Paul at new track complex

MONROEVILLE — As Allie Wilhelm emphatically stepped across the finish line, the Monroeville senior felt great. And it wasn't just because Wilhelm and three teammates won the 4x100-meter relay at Saturday's tri-meet against visiting Edison and St. Paul. The surface also felt great on her feet. Monroeville hosted its first-ever track meet after a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the venue. The new surface at the 89 N. Ridge St. facility is a far cry from what Monroeville athletes had been used to behind the high school for many years. "We have a stone track back behind the school with ruts and everything else," Wilhelm said. "This is great. We've been looking forward to having our first meet here. "We've been waiting all summer for it to be done, and it feels great to finally be able to run on the new track." Wilhelm and teammates Julia White, Alexa Adams and Payton Weilnau won the relay in 56.55 seconds, becoming the first from Monroeville to win an official race on the track. "We've never had a home track meet, so it's great to see everyone here supporting us," Wilhelm said. "I like the whole community being able to be here in our hometown to watch." Monroeville head coach Chris McDonald was blown away for Saturday's meet to have finally arrived. "Eagle pride was out in full force to bring the dream of the Monroeville Track Complex into a reality," McDonald said. "Hosting our first meet means so much. "To see the athletes' excitement to be able to host and compete at their place was awesome. We all wanted it to run smoothly." In a competitive girls meet, St. Paul combined for 15 first- and second-place finishes to Edison's 11 and Monroeville's six. Placing first for the Flyers included Adele Dowdell in the 800 (2:49.85) and the 1600 (6:25.08). Audry Sanders won the 100 (14.19) and Isabel Gross did the same in the 200 (29.47). Also for the Flyers, Lydia Rospert won the long jump (14-feet-2.5 inches), while the 4x200 (1:57.25) and 4x400 (4:38.6) relays also won their respective races. Edison got a pair of first-place finishes from Natalie Desautels in the hurdles and Lydia McQuillen in the throwing events. Desautels won the 100 hurdles in 18.34 seconds and the 300 in 58.49. McQuillen threw the discus 92 feet and won the shot put with 30-feet-7.25. Zoey Corfman won the 400 (1:03.73) for Edison, while Kathryn Cumston (4-feet-8) won the high jump and Kendal Kryger (7 feet) and the 4x800 relay took first in 11:20.62. McDonald also singled out Kaylee Roeder for trying the pole vault on Saturday. "She became, that I know of, our first successful girl vaulter while setting the school record by clearing six feet," he said. "And having actual long jump pits for our jumpers has been wonderful." The Chargers dominated the boys meet, winning 12 of the 17 events. That included standout jumper Trayvon Williams, who won the long jump (21-feet-10) and the 100 dash (11.48). Colin Butler won both the 110 hurdles (18.14) and the 300 hurdles (47.29). Also for Edison, Aiden Reeder (53.44) won the 400; Kellen McDonnell (4:59.51) won the 1600; Quintin Cox (12:03.16) was tops in the 3200; and Jacen Jeramay (10-feet-6) won the pole vault competition. Edison also won all four relays, including the 4x100 (1:36.9); the 4x200 (1:36.9); the 4x400 (3:53.42) and the 4x800 (9:22.1). The host Eagles took first place in three field events. Gabe Howell won the high jump (5-feet-10); Kole Ackerman won the discus throw (120-feet-1); and Brycen Dunlap took first in the shot put (43-feet-1.75). For St. Paul, Brady Daley won the 200 in 24.07 seconds and Adam Dowdell won the 800 in 2:16.73. ---------------------------------Edison, St. Paul at Monroeville resultsBOYS100: 1.
