Pitching leads St. Paul to first win

SANDUSKY — The St. Paul baseball team scored six times in the top of the seventh to break open a close game in a 10-4 non-league win over St. Mary Central Catholic on Tuesday at Dorn Park. The Flyers (1-1) got strong pitching for a second straight game. Senior Drew Kuhnle went all seven innings and allowed four runs (two earned) on four hits. He struck out 12 and walked five on 120 pitches. "Good win for us," St. Paul head coach Aaron Fries said. "Drew pitched really well. We struggled early finding our timing at the plate, but we were able to take advantage of some walks with timely hitting and good base running late in the game." Offensively, the Flyers scored 10 runs on seven hits. Gavin Thurston as 2 for 4 with a double, two RBIs and scored a pair of runs, while Ben Burger was 2 for with an RBI and a run scored. Also for the Flyers, Landon Fries singled with two RBIs, while Jacob Bocock and Ashton Stang added singles, and Kole Maxwell had an RBI. For Western, Caleb Pausch was 2 for 3, while Landyn Wiegel was 1 for 3 with an RBI. Cooper Zunis went the first four innings and allowed four earned runs on five hits with eight strikeouts and three walks. W. Bella Guerra paced St. Paul with three hits (one double), five RBIs and four runs scored. Ella Kalizewski was 2 for 3 with a double and seven RBIs, while Layla Gardner and Kaylee Altomore each singled with an RBI. Also for the Flyers, Geralyn Mutchler had three RBIs, while Taegan Mansfield-Bush added two. Guerra went the first two scorelessinnings and struck out two with no walks. Mallorie Sowers went the final three innings and allowed four earned runs on five hits with two strikes and three walks. St. Paul hosts Sycamore Mohawk in a doubleheader on Saturday. Veanna Helmstetter, Taryn Tyler, Avery Rosser and Emily Scheid each finished with three hits and two RBIs, with Scheid and Helmstetter each doubling, and Rosser tripled. Ava Krueger had two triples and two RBIs, while Madison Reiber and Rachel Fries each had two hits (two doubles). Scheid earned the win with four innings in the circle. Edison won all three singles positions, starting with Parker Campbell in a sweep (6-0, 6-0) at first singles over Spencer Heintz. At second singles, Noah Proctor beat Caiden Velliquette (6-1, 6-1) and Aidan Colbert beat Everett Hand (6-1, 6-2) at third singles. At first singles, Liz Campbell and Andrew Gray beat Seth Auger and Anthony Weiser (6-0, 6-1). At second doubles, the Oak Harbor team of Noah Jess and Nathan Warnke beat Sam McClester and Kiera Keoghan in three sets (2-6, 6-4, 10-4).
