Tornado causes damage in Huron County

PLYMOUTH — A significant tornado threatened areas along the southern edge of Huron County Thursday evening. The Huron County Management Agency confirmed that a tornado had touched down near New Washington, in Crawford County, and moved east at more than 40 miles per hour. The tornado was an EF-2, the fourth-highest ranking, with wind speeds of about 120 miles per hour. The maximum width of the tornado was an estimated 250 yards, according to the National Weather Service. It cut a path of about 10.3 miles east into Richland County, guiding slightly southeast as it neared Plymouth, a village split between Huron County and Richland County. There were no injuries or deaths resulting from the tornado, and damage to Huron County residents was relatively minor. But due to the size and severity of the tornado, the agency posted at about 8 p.m. Thursday that residents in the southern part of the county should "take cover." "We had minimal damage, some power lines down, an old outbuilding lost some shingles and we have some flooding but no significant damage," Huron County Emergency Management Agency administrative assistant Kye Stevens said. The National Weather Service and Huron County EMA sent teams out Friday morning to survey the damage. The most severe damage from the tornado occurred south of Huron County. "The tornado destroyed a single wide manufactured home and an outbuilding before moving east into Richland County," the weather service posted. "(It) caused extensive damage to homes, outbuildings, trees and power poles along the path." The weather service shared a photo of a destroyed outbuilding in Auburn Township in Crawford County
