Petition urges commissioner to approve land sale

NORWALK — After Huron County Commissioner Harry Brady reiterated his decision to not allow a land swap/sale to Norwalk City School District, locals created a petition to urge a new decision. The petition called "Urge Harry Brady to Reconsider His Vote on the Norwalk City Schools Land Swap Deal" was started on Feb. 22 by Norwalk resident Alan Furey. In the petitions description Furey writes: "The future of our children's education in Norwalk is at stake. We are urging Huron County Commissioner Harry Brady to reconsider his 'no' vote on the land deal with Norwalk City Schools. This crucial decision could pave the way for a new Elementary School, with 80 percent of the cost being covered by Ohio state funds. A 'yes' vote from Mr. Brady would not only demonstrate a commitment to improving our educational infrastructure but also make efficient use of taxpayer money. Our children deserve access to modern, well-equipped facilities that enhance their learning experience and prepare them for a brighter future. Let's invest in our children's education today for a better tomorrow. Please sign this petition and urge Commissioner Harry Brady to change his stance on this important issue." The petition currently has almost 600 signatures. At a special presentation meeting on Feb. 13, Huron County Commissioners heard from Garmann Miller, the firm that is planning the architecture and engineering options for a new Norwalk City School District building. The meeting was also attended by Superintendent Brad Cooley and multiple members of the Norwalk Board of Education. After the presentation, Brady read a prepared statement that was written before the presentation. Part of the statement read: "My position regarding the county's real property is the same now as it was a year ago: the county's concern for its real property and its building interest is paramount." School board members are still hopeful that a deal can be struck with the commissioners, and have addressed appreciation for community support on this issue."
