Robinson scores 1,000th point in Willard loss

WILLARD — In a matchup of two teams ranked in the top 10 of the Associated Press state poll, the Willard boys basketball team couldn't keep up with the potent offense of rival Shelby in a 89-67 non-league loss on Friday inside a sold out Robert L. Haas Gymnasium. The Whippets (20-2) — ranked No. 2 in the Division II poll — outscored the No. 9-ranked Flashes by 12 (26-14) in a decisive second quarter. Willard got a game-high 36 points from standout Max Dawson, while Cam Robinson finished with 17 points. Robinson surpassed the 1,000-point mark in the defeat, making him the 13th player in program history to reach the feat. Isaac Robinson also added 10 points for Willard. The Flashes get the winner of a third Perkins-Columbian meeting on March 1 in a sectional title game at home. Robinson 2 Monroeville 54, Mapleton 47 MONROEVILLE — After turning his ankle at Thursday's practice, Eagles senior Gabe Howell didn't just play on his Senior Night — he scored 27 points to lead an upset of the Mounties in a Firelands Conference game Friday night inside the Monroeville Athletic Complex. "I started our four seniors: Gabe Howell, Blake Schaub, Isaac Clingman and Kole Ackerman who did a great job and have meant a lot to the program," Monroeville coach Paul Roeder said. Cole Perry, a sophomore, added 10 points off the bench. Monroeville finished the regular season 7-15 (5-9 FC), while Mapleton fell to 15-7 (9-5). The Eagles play St. Mary Central Catholic (8-14) at 7 p.m. Wednesday in a Division IV sectional semifinal in Sandusky. Central 38 GREENWICH — The Big Red closed out the regular season at 9-13 overall and 7-7 in the FC by outscoring the Trojans one each of the first three quarters of an FC win. Plymouth led 11-6 after one quarter and 23-14 at halftime. They added a 16-10 scoring edge in the third quarter to go up 39-24. The Big Red got 18 points from Gavin Bishop, while Alexai Grose added nine points and Jarrett Burrer added eight. South Central (3-19, 1-13) got 15 points from Gunner Ray in the loss. Trey Knoll added 11 points. Plymouth is at Buckeye Central in a Div. IV sectional semifinal on Wednesday, while the Trojans await the Mansfield St. Peter's-Seneca East winner on Friday in a sectional final. Crestview 73, Western Reserve 37 OLIVESBURG — The state-ranked Cougars (21-1, 13-1) cruised to their FC title share with St. Paul after routing the Roughriders at home Friday night. Western Reserve closed out the regular season at 10-10 overall and 7-7 in the FC. The 'Riders host Cardinal Stritch in a Division III sectional semifinal on Tuesday. Margaretta 72, Edison 61 CASTALIA — The Chargers trailed by just a point at halftime against the state-ranked Polar Bears, who steadily pulled away in the second half to earn an SBC Bay co-title with Willard. The Bears (19-3, 9-1), who led 37-36 at halftime, outscored the Chargers 18-7 in the third quarter to take a 55-43 lead into the fourth. Edison got no closer than nine points in the fourth quarter. The Bears outscored the Chargers, 25-17, in the first quarter, and it looked like Margaretta might cruise to victory. But Edison (6-16, 2-8) fought back, taking a 34-32 lead on a layup by Cole Leimeister with 2:49 to play in the first half. Davin Wendt had a team-high 22 points to lead the Chargers and Coltyn Meagrow scored 15 points. Edison travels to Oak Harbor to face the Rockets (11-11) in a Div. III sectional semifinal on Tuesday. "We're playing some of our best basketball heading into the tournament. I'm excited," Campana said. "It should be another good game. From where we started, we have made leaps and bounds.
