Roby back in court

NORWALK — Former Fremont police officer Cage Roby appeared in court on Monday for a pretrial hearing. A plea offer has not yet been extended, and a jury trial is scheduled for March 6 with an expected length of three days. During an arraignment hearing on Thursday, Dec. 14, Roby pleaded not guilty to all 12 counts, including sexual battery and pandering sexually oriented material involving a minor or impaired person. Roby, a resident of Monroeville and former police officer, was issued a warrant upon indictment by the grand jury on Dec. 11. Roby is currently out on bail, which Judge James Conway set at $50,000 cash. Roby was put on administrative leave on Feb. 23, 2023 by Fremont police after the department's chief, Derek Wensinger, was notified of an alleged situation involving Roby exchanging text messages with a minor. Roby resigned from Fremont police on Feb. 24, after a brief internal investigation was done and Chief Wensinger said the situation had "criminal matter." "Cage Roby resigned from the Fremont Police Department on the morning of February 24 prior to the completion of an internal investigation," Wensinger said in a press release on March 20. "Ohio BCI is actively investigating the situation that I consider a criminal matter at this time." His next appearance in court is scheduled for Feb. 13.
