Willard shooting suspect indicted

NORWALK — The suspect in the Jan. 16 shooting of two people at a Willard-area taven was indicted Friday. Kyle Vanderpool, 24, of Plymouth, was indicted on the following charges by a grand jury in the Huron County Court of Common Pleas: • Two counts of attempting to commit an offense, both felonies of the first degree; • Two counts of felonious assault, both felonies of the second degree; • Four counts of attempting to commit an offense, all felonies of the second degree; • One count of illegal possession of a firearm in a liquor permit premises, a felony of the third degree; • One count of having weapons while under disability, a felony of the third degree; and aggravated possession of drugs, a felony of the fifth degree. Vanderpool allegedly shot two people at the Havana Tavern outside of Willard. The shooting happened around 8:46 p.m. at the tavern, located at 176 Gregory Road. One of the people who was shot is still in the hospital, according to Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy David Ditz. The other victim was treated and released. It was not known what led up to the shooting and the names of the victims also have not been released. Ditz cited Marsy's Law in not releasing the names. Marsy's Law seeks to give crime victims meaningful and enforceable constitutional rights equal to the rights of the accused, according to marsyslaw.us. "I don't feel comfortable sharing that (what led up to the shooting)," Ditz said. "There still some contradictory stories and the deputies are still trying to run it all down." The owners of the Havana Tavern have not responded to requests for interviews.
