Hipp's huge game paces Western

COLLINS — The Roughriders made sure Friday's rematch with the Trojans wasn't as close in a 76-59 win in Firelands Conference play. The 'Riders (7-5, 5-3) survived by a 56-53 score over the Trojans (2-11, 0-8) back on Dec. 15 in Greenwich. On Friday, Chase Hipp was dominant, nearly registering a triple-double with 30 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. He was 10-of-10 at the free-throw line and also added four steals. Also for Western, Hayden Keith had 20 points and six rebounds, while Brexton Fraelich had eight points and Braxton Balog added seven points and five rebounds. For South Central, Weston June scored 16 points, grabbed nine rebounds and had three blocks. Eric Sanders had 12 points, while Gunner Ray added 11 points, three rebounds and three assists. Also for the Trojans, Trey Knoll scored 11 points with four rebounds, and Carter Caudill had six points and three rebounds. But on Friday night, the Flashes girls basketball team got vengeance in a big way, picking up a 63-46 SBC Bay Division victory. Caitlyn Weaver scored 24 points, including five 3-pointers, to lead Willard, which improved to 7-9 (4-3 SBC Bay). The game was never really in doubt. The Flashes led 18-9 after one and 36-19 at the halftime break. Willard added 21 points in the fourth quarter to make the deficit much too insurmountable. It was a balanced effort behind Weaver: Camryn Wiers with nine and the trio of Makinley Schaffer, Corrin Gettys and Reese Bedingfield with seven apiece.
