Ware goes 5-0 at Anthony Wayne; three area champs at Mapleton

WHITEHOUSE — The Norwalk High School wrestling team posted a 2-3 record on Jan. 20 in a field that was mostly made up of Division I opponents at the Anthony Wayne duals. The Truckers posted wins over Sylvania Northview, 51-21, and Swanton, 42-25. The team fell to host Anthony Wayne (48-34), Toledo St. John's (42-39) and Perrysburg (59-12). The Yellow Jackets are the No. 3-ranked team in Div. I according to the Jan. 17 rankings done by borofanohio.net. Austin Ware — ranked No. 24 at 138 pounds in Division II — finished 5-0 for the Truckers to improve to 25-5 overall for the season. "It was an OK day," Norwalk head coach Erich Metzger said. "There were some good things, but a lot of frustration. I look at this past weekend as a tuneup before the heart of our competition starts. The next month is full of SBC competition, and we know it's one of the toughest conferences in the state." Norwalk is at the Sandusky Bay Conference duals beginning at 9 a.m. this Saturday at Sandusky High School. "Our boys have worked extremely hard this year, and I want to see them live up to their potential," Metzger said. "It's up to them on how the next few weeks go." Three area champs at Mapleton ORANGE TWP. — Wrestlers from Plymouth, South Central and Western Reserve won their respective weight class on Jan. 20 at the Mapleton Dave Rohr Classic. The Big Red scored 138 points to finish sixth overall out of 19 teams, while South Central (125) was seventh and Western Reserve (76.5) was 10th. Plymouth was paced by sophomore Ben Trimmer, who won the 132-pound class. He went 5-0 for the tournament, as he opened with a pair of decisions by scores of 8-1 and 4-2. Trimmer (20-5) then picked up a pair of pins in 2:28 and 1:11 to reach the final, where he also pinned Medina Buckeye's Aiden Mangin in 3:45. Placing second for the Big Red included Cam Wagers (120) and Noah Robinson (215). Zach Miller (150) and Hunter McClure each placed fourth, and Isaiah Miller (157) was sixth for Plymouth. South Central placed six wrestlers, led by Diton Farnsworth winning the title at 113. The No. 11-ranked wrestler at the weight in Div. III pinned four straight opponents in 2:50, 102, 1:19 and 5:42 to reach the finals. Farnsworth then posted a 15-6 major decision over New Philadelphia's Camden Richardson to improve to 29-3 for the season. Also for South Central, Caiden Wilson (138) was second at 138 and Alex Hamons was third (190). Both Wyatt Martin (106) and Cole Frankart (144) placed fourth, while Greyson Fisher (150) was sixth for the Trojans. South Central finished 22-13 overall with 17 wins by pin. "Each week these guys keep stepping up to the challenges they face," S.C. head coach Ken Johnson said. "We as a staff are excited with the way they are competing. Each week they keep improving. "They push each other in the practice room and their efforts there are producing results." For Western, freshman Lucas Summerfield won the title at 106 with several tight finishes. After opening with a 15-0 technical fall, Summerfield edged Tony Perry from Perry High School in Lake County, 4-3. After a pin in 2:44, Summerfield posted a 5-4 win over Medina Buckeye's Brenden McKee. In the finals, Summerfield (21-4) rematched with Perry and won the match with another decision, 7-3. Also for the Roughriders, Anthony Lierenz (113) and Drake Munroe (150) each placed fifth, while Kholer Graves (120) finished in sixth place. POWER LIFTING S.C. competes at Clay OREGON — The South Central girls powerlifting team broke three meet records on Jan. 20 at the sixth annual Oregon Clay meet. Jayla Tolliver had a personal-best deadlift and new meet record of 335 pounds in the 175 weight class for the Trojans. Her 690 pounds of total weight is also a new meet record as well. Jenna Shepherd also had a record-setting day for the Trojans at 225. She totaled 305 in the squat and 320 in the deadlift for a total of 745 pounds. Also for South Central, Roxanne Wilson set a squat record (265) in the 135-pound weight class. Sam Bowers paced the Trojans in the boys competition. At 185, Bowers totaled 225 (bench), 480 (deadlift) and 590 (squat) for the top total weight of 1,095 pounds. More than 200 competitors participated in the meet.
