Shooting at bar injures 2

NORWICH TWP. — One man is in custody after two people were reportedly shot Tuesday night at a Willard-area tavern. The Huron County Sheriff's Office said Kyle Vanderpool, 24, Plymouth, was taken into custody, medically treated, and transported to the Huron County Jail Tuesday night after a shooting at the Havana Tavern near the intersections of South Street and North Greenfield Road near Willard. The sheriff's office is not saying what led up to the shooting, which happened at around 8:46 p.m. at the tavern, 176 Gregory Road. Vanderpool appeared at Norwalk Municipal Court Wednesday morning and was charged with two counts of felonious assault. He was given a cash bond of $100,000. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Jan. 26. Additional details — like the condition of the victims — were not available Wednesday. "Two individuals were shot and transported to the hospital, and the suspect was taken into custody," according to a sheriff's office press release. The sheriff's office thanked the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the Willard Fire Department and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation for their assistance. The sheriff's office said in a press release that no additional information will be released at this time as the matter is "being currently investigated." The owners of the Havana Tavern could not be reached for comment on Wednesday, but they did issue a statement on their Facebook page. "As many of you have heard, our business has experienced a situation we never dreamed could have happened in our small community," the Facebook post states. "Tuesday evening 2 people were shot in a senseless act @ Havana Tavern. Both men are in surgery. No further details at this time," the post continued. "We thank you for your support in this difficult time and ask you to join us in praying for the full recovery of the victims of this tragedy."
