St. Paul jumps on Plymouth in road win

PLYMOUTH — The St. Paul boys basketball team wasted little time jumping on host Plymouth in Friday's 62-39 win over the Big Red in a Firelands Conference matchup at Plymouth High School. The Flyers (4-1, 4-0) opened the game on an 11-2 scoring run and never trailed in the game. Evan Wangler and Nolan McCall combined to score all 11 points to start the game for the Flyers, who led 16-4 with 1:54 left in the first quarter on a Michael Kirk short jumper. Korey Frazee then scored and Kirk added two free throws with 42.1 seconds left in the quarter to give St. Paul a 20-9 lead after one. McCall and Dan Schwan put the punctuation mark on the game in the second quarter for St. Paul. The pair opened the quarter with consecutive baskets within the first 80 seconds for a 24-12 lead. At the 3:05 mark, Schwan drained a 3-pointer, then the Flyers got a steal in the backcourt, and McCall was able to put down an easy two-handed slam dunk just seconds later to give St. Paul a commanding 36-20 lead with 2:58 left the half. The Flyers led 36-23 at the break and extended their lead to 48-28 through three quarters. A 3 by Korey Frazee to open the fourth quarter gave St. Paul its largest lead of the game. McCall finished with a game-high 19 points for St. Paul, which was two points shy of five players in double-figures for a second straight game. Wangler and Schwan each scored 10 points, while Frazee and Kirk each added nine points. For Plymouth (3-5, 2-2), Layne Bushey led the way with 12 points and Gavin Bishop added nine. Plymouth hosts Bucyrus Wynford on Saturday. St. Paul will host Edison (2-5) in a non-league game on Tuesday in Norwalk. ST.
