Local woman follows son every step of the way

ALLENDALE, Mich. — The NCAA Division II Grand Valley State University football team had a record-setting year under first-year coach Scott Wooster. Scott is the son of the late Duncan and Linda Jo Wooster. Linda Jo (Weisenberger) Wooster was born in Norwalk and grew up on the family farm in West Hartland. She is the daughter of the late Alfred (Joe) and Theresa (Potts) Weisenberger. Linda Jo attended Hartland Elementary School and Western Reserve High School, where she played the clarinet in the band. After graduating from Western Reserve in 1969, she worked as a bookkeeper for Maxi Tire until 1973. She married Duncan Wooster in the fall of 1973 and moved to the Flint, Mich., area. The couple had two sons, Duncan MacLeod, currently a captain for Alaska Airlines, based in San Francisco, and Scott. There are two years difference in their ages. The two boys played together on the Atherton High School football team in Burton, Mich. Duncan was the left tackle and Scott was the left guard. Scott began his college football career at Eastern Michigan in 1995. He was red-shirted and then decided to transfer to Wayne State University in Detroit for the 1996 season. He played guard for three years at WSU. After graduating he taught and coached at Warren Mott High School in suburban Detroit until 2009. During his later years as a line coach at Warren Mott, Scott volunteered to work with the coaching staff at Wayne State University. He was eventually hired as a line coach at WSU and coached there for 11 years. He was on the staff in 2011 when the team unexpectedly made it to the Div. II national championship game, where it lost to Pittsburg State. Wooster left WSU for GVSU in 2020 and was offensive line coach until January 2023 when he was named the eighth coach at the school, replacing Matt Mitchell, who followed Luke Fickell to Wisconsin as the special teams coach. This past season, GVSU won the GLIAC title with a 6-0 mark and went 9-1 overall. The team beat Ferris State and Pittsburg State to advance to the NCAA quarterfinals, where it lost to eventual champion Harding (Ark.), 7-6. GVSU's only loss in the regular season was in the opener to Colorado School of the Mines — which lost to Harding in the title game — on a last-second field goal. Linda and Duncan moved to rural Collins in 2015. Scott visits whenever he can and loves walleye fishing in his spare time. Scott and his wife, Christina, have one daughter, Ellie. They currently live in suburban Grand Rapids. Scott is in good family company with his college football career. His great uncle George Potts played for Xavier as a kicker and his great uncle John Potts played for Wichita State as a kicker. Both played for St. Paul High School.
