Berlin Heights Public Library — January 2024 Calendar of Events Jan. 8, 22, 29 | Monday | 10:30-11AM Twist & Shout [ CHILDREN'S SERVICES ] Dance, sing, and play instruments with your friends at the library! This program is intended for children under 5 and their caregivers. Jan. 8, 22, 29 | Monday | 3-3:30PM Mellow Monday [ TEEN SERVICES ] Mondays can be tough especially in middle school. Each Monday after school join us at the Berlin Heights library for an hour of relaxing crafts, immersive gaming, and hanging out. For ages 8-14. Jan. 8 | Monday | 3:30-4PM Teen Advisory Board [ TEEN SERVICES ] Is there a certain program you would love to attend at the library? Do you have suggestions for how to improve the library's teen area or programming? Join the teen librarian, Katrina, at the Teen Advisory Board meeting and share your ideas on how to improve the library and plan future programming. Jan. 18 | Thursday | 6:30-7:30PM Adult Book Club | The Boy in the Suitcase [ ADULT SERVICES ] Start your new year off on the right foot by joining our monthly book club. Jan. 27 | Saturday | 12-1PM Author Talks | Flora Church [ ADULT SERVICES ] Join us for an afternoon book signing as we host long-time Berlin Heights resident and writer Flora Church. Church will discuss her recently published novel, Little Ann, under the pen name Emma Charles. Paperback editions of her books will be available on the day of the event (Little Ann as Emma Charles, $6.99; A High Sanctuary as Emma Charles, $12.99; The Magic Lighthouse as L.F. Chiesa, $9.99). Library Snack Challenge *RR [ CHILDREN'S SERVICES ][ TEEN SERVICES ] Teens and tweens are invited to join us for this food-centric series, which will use their creativity to replicate a fun snack. This month we will be making snowman cake pops. This program is designed for tweens and teens in 4th-12th grade. Registration required by January 3. Jan. 8 | Monday | 6-7PM Between the Lines: All About Paper *RR [ TEEN SERVICES ][ ADULT SERVICES ] The new year always brings a flood of new people to the world of planning and journaling, but did you know that one of the most vital elements of the hobby is one frequently overlooked by newbies? Having the right paper can truly make-or-break the writing experience. Learn about how different paper characteristics affect the way a pen or pencil glides across the page, and discover high-quality options for every budget. This event is for adults and teens 16+. [ This is a special Get Organized Month event. Attendees at these special programs will be entered into a raffle for an exciting planner-friendly prize. ] Jan. 9, 16, 23, 30 | Tuesday | 10-10:30AM Stay & Play [ CHILDREN'S SERVICES ] In this program, we use music along with large- and small-motor movement to engage in a fun atmosphere that encourages care givers and children to foster early learning through play. This program will start with 10 to 15 minutes of songs, rhymes, and structured activities and then parents and care givers are invited to stay and play. Ages 1-4. Jan. 9 | Tuesday | 4-4:30PM Paws to Read [ CHILDREN'S SERVICES ] Come read with therapy dog, Daisy, in the cozy library atmosphere! Daisy provides a non-judgmental reading partner, allowing kids to practice and improve their skills with performance pressure removed. For children grades K-6. Jan. 13 | Saturday | 11AM-12PM Intro to Fountain Pens *RR [ ADULT SERVICES ] Join us for an introduction to fountain pens exploring how to get started using and/or collecting them. Discover the different parts that make up a fountain pen, what makes fountain pen inks special, what to look for when selecting a pen and/or ink, and how to write with one. BONUS, attendees receive a FREE fountain pen with ink converter. This program is geared toward adults and older teens 16+. Registration required. Jan. 20 | Saturday | 12-1PM Not Since Tecumseh: Darkness at Midday, A Total Eclipse of the Sun [ ADULT SERVICES ] The last time Ohio witnessed a total eclipse of the sun was June 16, 1806. Hear about the history associated with this famous event (known as Tecumseh's Eclipse), along with subsequent eclipse expeditions and stories. Jan. 22 | Monday | 10-11AM Milan's Morning Moment | Woman with the Blue Star [ ADULT SERVICES ] Resolutions start with you! It's time to add a new book club to your new year. Jan. 25 | Thursday | 6:30-7:30PM Human Trafficking: Understanding the Impact Through an Interprofessional Lens [ ADULT SERVICES ] Join Lara B. Wilken, DNP, RN, as she unravels the complicated web of human trafficking. She will identify vulnerable populations frequently susceptible to it, distinguish barriers to identification, and discuss the topic as a public healthcare issue - all through an interprofessional lens. Jan. 27 | Saturday | 10AM-1PM Chocolate Factory Escape Room *RR [ CHILDREN'S SERVICES ][ TEEN SERVICES ][ ADULT SERVICES ] Do you love to solve mysteries? Sign up for the library's escape room with a sweet twist. Help to solve a chocolate factory mystery that requires using all of your senses, including taste and smell. Families or groups should have one individual register for this event. After registering, a librarian will contact you for more details about your group and to have you choose a specific thirty-minute time to explore our escape room. All ages welcome.
