There are angels around everywhere in Norwalk

NORWALK — More than 400 children will benefit from The Norwalk Salvation Army's Angel Tree program this year. That's what Capt. Kate Esker said on Thursday while she was busy sorting out items that will be given to area kids. She said they first started signing people up and collecting donated gifts earlier this year. "Our Christmas starts in September," she joked. She also said two sets of people benefit from participating — people who donate toys and people who receive them. Of the people who donate to the program, she said, "I think they know that it's for a family in need and it's an opportunity to give back." Volunteers have been sorting toys at Norwalk's First Presbyterian Church since Tuesday and they will be done on Wednesdsay of next week. That's when they start handing out items to the 401 kids who are on their list. She also thanked First Presbyterian Church for letting them use their gymnasium to sort and distribute gifts. "We're so thankful to First Presbyterian Church," she said. Esker said she is also thankful for the donors who adopt entire families, not just kids. "We have about 10 donors who adopt for the whole family," Esker said. While the program is in full-speed-ahead mode, there are still 150 kids on the wait list for toys.
