Eight from Monroeville, St. Paul earn All-Ohio

COLUMBUS — Two longtime Firelands Conference stalwarts and rivals placed eight players on the Division VII All-Ohio football teams, the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association announced on Dec. 4. St. Paul (8-5) won the Firelands Conference with a 6-0 record, and was the only team in the league to win a playoff game. The Flyers advanced to the third round, where they fell to state runners-up Dalton, 48-28. Monroeville (7-4, 5-1) was second to St. Paul in the FC, capping the biggest turnaround in the state after going 0-10 in 2022, which came on the heels of a 3-8 finish in 2021. Monroeville junior defensive back Evan Benfer was selected to the All-Ohio first team. Meanwhle, third-year head coach Tylor Nester was one of three coaches to be voted Coach of the Year. Benfer totaled 142 tackles with six interceptions and a fumble recovery from the safety position in 11 games. As a quarterback, he was 76-of-148 passing for 1,062 yards and 14 touchdowns and six interceptions. He ran 198 times for 1,493 yards and 25 TDs. Three area players were selected to the second team, including Benfer's teammate, senior offensive lineman Isaac Clingman. He led an offensive line that blocked for a unit that totaled 3,828 yards and 53 TDs this season. St. Paul senior running back Josh Pocos ran for 1,780 yards and 23 TDs in 13 games to earn a second team offense spot for the Flyers. Junior defensive lineman Tristan Nickoli was also second team with a team-best 107 tackles and 10 sacks. Senior offensive lineman Tyler Baxter, who helped block for a unit that totaled 5,161 yards and 63 TDs, was honorable mention for St. Paul. Monroeville also had three players on the honorable mention offense. Senior receiver Blake Schaub caught 36 passes for 508 yards and 7 TDs, while junior running back Landen Roeder ran 172 times for 1,085 yards and 12 TDs. Junior kicker Landon Stein rounded out the trio, as he was 43-of-47 on extra points and 2-of-3 on field goals for the Eagles.
