New London board, teachers agree to a new contract

NEW LONDON — The board of education voted unanimously to accept a new three-year contract with the teachers. It includes yearly cost of living increases of 3 1/2, 3, and 2 1/2 percent, plus a reduction in employee insurance premiums. Board members discussed matters concerning the new stadium project with representatives from GPD Architects. The stadium will be situated west of the main building but whether it will run east/west or north/south has yet to be decided. Other issues included whether the surface will be grass or synthetic turf and what exterior materials and colors will be used for the concession/locker room building. Jerome Johnson, regional director of the Boys & Girls Club, also met with the board. He said the finished building is "amazing and a great space," and he praised Superintendent Brad Romano for his leadership on the project. He also wants to see as much community engagement as possible. In other business the board: • Approved a contract with GPD Group for architectural and engineering study and design of water drainage for the academic building. • Passed on first reading a policy concerning graduation requirements. • Non-renewed maintenance/custodian employee Andrew Stewart. • Accepted donations, approved the five-year financial forecast and took action on several other routine matters.
