Rangel-Negrete, Gamble unanimous SBC first team

Two Norwalk standouts were unanimous selections to the All-Sandusky Bay Conference soccer first team, the league announced on Friday. This was the first season of the one-division SBC soccer setup since the five former Northern Ohio League teams joined the league in 2017. There were 11 teams in the boys division, resulting in 20-member first- and second-teams. Senior Erik Rangel-Negrete earned the top spot as an attacker, and junior Mason Gamble was a unanimous pick as a defender. In a season where the Truckers needed a new top scorer, Rangel-Negrete did that and more. He finished with 31 goals and 13 assists, good for 75 points in 20 matches. That included a program record eight goals in a Sept. 6 win vs. Clyde. The eight goals also made Rangel-Negrete one of 18 players in OHSAA history to score eight or more goals in a match, which is also tied for the fifth-highest total in Ohio history according to the unofficial state record book. Meanwhile, Gamble helped anchor a defense that posted nine shutouts, and allowed one goal in two others. Also for Norwalk, sophomore midfielder Landon Ferkel was selected to the second team. The Truckers finished 12-8 this season, winning a Division II sectional title and finishing district runners-up for a third time in program history. Edison midfielder Alex Davidson (11 goals, 13 assists) earned a spot on the first team. The Div. III sectional champion Chargers (11-8) also had goalkeeper Samuel McClester, defender Jace Jeremay and attackers Jonah Main and Jose Serna Amaya on the second team. Kellen McDonnell was honorable mention at midfielder. For Willard (6-11), attacker Shalim Monzon and defender Jakob Harris were second team. Goalkeeper Elazar Lopez and midfielder Oscar Valtierra earned honorable mention. Vermilion's Alex Werth totaled 27 goals and added 14 assists to earn Most Outstanding Performer for league runners-up Vermilion. Outright champion Perkins had six first team selections.
