Norwalk-Lexington district doubleheader in Shelby

SHELBY — Call it a traditional doubleheader. Thanks to a pair of district semifinal wins in two different sports, Norwalk will now face Lexington in boys soccer and volleyball district championship matches on Thursday. Both schools were scheduled to meet in the two sports at two different times and locations. However, after some conversations within the Northwest district, adjustments have been made to make things easier on the players, coaches, parents and supporters for both sports. Originally scheduled for 6 p.m., the Division II district title match in boys soccer will now start at 5:30 p.m. at Shelby High School. The Truckers (12-7) face the Minutemen (14-3-1) for a spot in a regional semifinal next week. Norwalk was the No. 4 seed in the district, but earned a shot at the No. 11-ranked team in the Div. II state coaches poll with wins over Willard, Vermilion and Mansfield Senior. Meanwhile, the Norwalk and Lexington volleyball teams will shift locations back to where it all started. The volleyball district final was originally schedule for 6 p.m. at Seneca East High School, which was the site of Tuesday's wins by both teams. But now that championship match between the top two seeds in the district will also be played at Shelby High School with a 7:30 p.m. start. That should put the soccer match in the closing minutes when the volleyball tips off inside Shelby High School. Norwalk (18-6) and Lexington (19-5) met in the regular season and played a best-of-three as part of a tri-match, which also happened to be at Shelby High School with the Whippets on Sept. 16. Lexington won that match in two (25-16, 25-17). On Tuesday, Lex outlasted Ontario in five sets, including a 15-13 win in Set 5, while Norwalk won a lengthy-four setter in the nightcap over Shelby that included a 31-29 win in the second set.
