Edison earns No. 10 ranking in final AP poll

COLUMBUS — The Edison football team finished with a top 10 spot in the final Associated Press high school state poll in Division V, it was announced on Monday. The Chargers (9-1) — coming off a big 35-7 win over arch rival Huron (7-3) in a winner-take-all game for the SBC Bay Division championship — finished as the No. 10 team in the division. Edison earned the No. 2 seed in Region 18, and are assured two home playoff games in Milan with a victory this Friday. The Chargers will be big favorites over No. 15-seed Spencerville (3-7). With a win, they would host the winner between No. 7 Eastwood (8-2) and No. 10 Marion Pleasant (6-4) on Nov. 3. Four other Sandusky Bay Conference teams appeared in the final poll. In Div. III, Tiffin Columbian (8-2) ended 12th, while Perkins (9-0) was third in Div. IV. The Pirates beat the Tornadoes on Oct. 20 for the SBC Lake title in Tiffin. In Div. VII, Hopewell-Loudon (10-0) finished third and Tiffin Calvert (8-1) was sixth. The Chieftains topped the Senecas, 19-7, on Oct. 20 for the SBC River title. Also in Div. V, former longtime SBC member Oak Harbor (10-0) finished at No. 4. Of note to the area with playoff pairings, Toronto (9-1) finished 16th in Div. VII. St. Paul (6-4) will make the long trip to face the Red Knights in a first-round game in Region 25 this Friday. The AP poll champions in each division included Lakewood St. Edward (Div. I), Massillon Washington (Div. II), Toledo Central Catholic (Div. III), Clarksville Clinton-Massie (Div. IV), Perry (Div. V), Kirtland (Div. VI) and Maria Stein Marion Local (Div. VII).
