Norwalk's Miller wins sectional singles title

FREMONT — The Norwalk girls tennis team advanced a pair of doubles teams and one singles player to the Division I district tournament on Saturday. First singles standout Megan Miller won her singles bracket at the Div. I sectional at Fremont Ross. Teammates Sidney Sage and Ana Osborn finished runners-up in doubles, while Kenzie Smith and Lauren Brown placed third. In the semifinals at singles, Miller defeated Oregon Clay's Grace Fortier (6-1, 6-1). Facing Fremont Ross' Kayla Lewis on her home court, Miller (23-13) also won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Miller opened her tournament with three sweeps (6-0, 6-0) over Columbian's Paris Salyer, Fremont's Shelby Steinberger and Ashland's Jocelyn Honaker. Sage and Osborn started their Saturday with a win over Tiffin Columbian's Elise Fruth and Leah Wahl (6-1, 6-1). They fell in the finals against Ashland's Morgan Kaufman and Chloe Ediger (6-2, 6-3). After a first-round bye, Sage and Osborn beat Oregon Clay's Elaina Garcia and Gianna Donofrio (6-0, 6-3), then defeated Fremont's Emilee Whitcomb and Megan Hanes (6-0, 6-3). Meanwhile, Brown and Smith fell to Kaufman and Ediger in the semis (7-5 (5), 6-3), but rebounded to defeat Fruth and Wahl in the third-place match in a sweep (6-0, 6-0). They started with a sweep (6-0, 6-0) over Sandusky's Kira Hunter and Janiya Daniel, then beat Fremont's Mariska Rakay and Elayna Gray (6-1, 6-2). The five players will open district play at 10 a.m. Thursday at Port Clinton's Hablitzel Von Thron complex. BOYS SOCCER Norwalk 7, Oak Harbor 0 OAK HARBOR — The Truckers improved to 9-6 overall with Saturday's shutout non-league win over the host Rockets. Erik Rangel-Negrete and Ben Snyder each scored twice for the Truckers. Jose Negrete, Kingston Gonzales and Garrett Demuth each had one goal. Assists for Norwalk came from Snyder, Jose Negrete, Omar Dominguez, Mason Gamble and Landon Ferkel. Norwalk will host Firelands at 10 a.m. Saturday in its regular season finale. GIRLS SOCCER Oak Harbor 5, Norwalk 2 OAK HARBOR — The Truckers saw their five-match win streak come to an end with Saturday's non-league loss to the host Rockets (11-3). Norwalk (11-2) got a goal from Claire Spettle on a penalty kick, while Audrey Sanders scored off an assist from Taryn Temple. Goalkeeper Lilly Farmer had 10 saves for the Truckers, who have another non-league test on Monday when they visit Mapleton (10-2). VOLLEYBALL Edison 3, Bucyrus 0 MILAN — The Chargers swept the visiting Lady Red in a non-league match on Saturday to improve to 7-11 overall. Edison won by scores of 25-18, 25-21 and 25-23. Karin Wlodarsky finished with six kills, 11 digs and served 17 points with five aces for the Chargers. Ella Habeck had seven kills, 16 digs, seven points and three blocks. Jorja Byington also had eight kills and three blocks, and Taylor Moore had 14 digs. Also for Edison, Paige McFadden had nine assists and six points, while Taylor Wlodarsky had nine assists, and Ella Booth had six points. Edison entertains Willard on Tuesday in an SBC Bay Division match. Lexington 3, Willard 0 LEXINGTON — The Crimson Flashes fell in three sets to host Lexington (17-4), which was expected to be the top seed in its Division II district over the weekend. Willard (13-7) by scores of 25-20, 25-21 and 25-20. Kelsey Lykins had nine kills, three blocks and seven digs for the Flashes, while Caitlyn Weaver was 16 for 16 serving with two aces, 16 assists and four digs. Also for Willard, Natalie Frye was 15 for 15 serving with two aces, while Natalie Slone had six kills and Makinley Schaffer had five. Morgan Lofland added six digs. CROSS COUNTRY Landis sets two-mile mark NEW LONDON — Reese Landis lowered her school record in the two-mile on Saturday at the host New London Dan Olien Invitational. A returning All-Ohioan as well as a state track qualifier, Landis finished in 11:33 in her final tune-up before the Firelands Conference championship meet at Mapleton on Oct. 14. The Wildcats took first place in both the boys and girls' two-mile races. Behind Landis was Valery Henry (13:19.6) in third; Alyssa Henry (14:19) in seventh; Madison Smith (13:39) in 10th; Emma McCully (15:20.7) in 18th and Cera DeLong (17:22.6) in 27th. In the boys race, Jalen Randleman was second overall in 10:21. Ryan Twining was sixth (10:55.8), followed by Tate Landis (11:15) in 11th; Fritz McCulley (11:25.6) in 13th; and Jackson Geist (11:44.5) in 18th. Norwalk runs Edison two-mile MILAN — The Truckers and Western Reserve visited the Edison two-mile Invitational on Saturday. Alex Christophel led the NHS boys by winning the race in 10:34. Isabel Ott was the top finisher on the girls side, placing third 12:51. Edison's All-Ohioan, Grace Anderson, won the girls race with a time of 11:59. Also for Norwalk, Max Bores was fourth (11:26). He was followed by William Cloud (11:50) in ninth; Landen Knoll (11:52) in 10th; Michael Lucas (11:53) in 11th; Jake Bissell (12:05) in 13th; and Adam Slate (12:05) in 14th. Grace Norris (13;07) was fourth for the NHS girls. She was followed by Maddison Trenor (13:10) in sixth; Kayli Bergman (13:78) in 14th; Allison Rothhaar (14:22) in 16th; Serenity Lyons (14:25) in 17th; and Allison Konik (14:34) in 18th. Norwalk will compete in the SBC championships on Saturday (Oct. 14) at Hedges-Boyer Park in Tiffin.
