Results of after-school program are adding up

NORWALK — Children taking part in a federally-funded, after-school program operated by Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeast Ohio in Huron County during the 2022-2023 school year made significant improvements their reading and math scores, according to an independent evaluation. The 21st Century Community Learning Center program at New London Elementary School also received high marks from parents, the report said. Over the course of the year, children in the program at New London improved their performances on the iReady Reading assessment an average of anywhere from 9 to 17%, depending on the grade, according to the evaluation. Kindergarten math scores on the same test improved by 13%. All of the New London parents surveyed indicated they would recommend the program to others, with 83% strongly agreeing. In addition, the report noted excellent attendance at family nights in the spring, with 60% of parents attending an April event and 67% attending one in May. The 21st Century Community Learning Center program supports the creation of places that provide academic enrichment opportunities during non-school hours for children, particularly students who attend high-poverty and low-performing schools. The program helps students meet state and local academic standards in core academic subjects, such as reading and math; offers students a broad array of enrichment activities that can complement their regular academic programs; and offers literacy and other educational services to the families of participating children. External experts evaluate the program sites and issue findings to the federal government. "We are excited and encouraged by the academic gains made by our Club members at the 21st Century sites and pleased that the program has been so well-received by parents," said Tiana Sanders, 21st Century Program Manager for BGCNEO. "We also offer students access to a broad array of additional services, such as those that focus on youth development, social emotional learning, civic engagement and nutritional and physical health." Boys & Girls Clubs provide safe, fun places for kids ages 6 to 18 to go after school with a focus on academic success, healthy lifestyles and character development. There is no cost to join a Club. BGCNEO was formed in 2019 by the merger of Clubs in Cleveland, Akron, Lorain County and Sandusky. It now operates 49 Clubs in six Northeast Ohio counties.
