Medina, Chargers roll to 4-0

MILAN — Spread the wealth. Typically at an Edison football game for the past 20-plus years, that has meant multiple different players from the backfield scoring touchdowns out of the triple option. And while that was still the case on Friday, there was also an added element for the Chargers against visiting Burton Berkshire. Senior quarterback Marcus Medina was 8-of-10 passing for 205 yards and four touchdowns — in just the first half — while connecting with three different receivers for the scores. Medina also scored twice on the ground as Edison (4-0) rolled to a 62-19 victory. "We got the guys to do the job for a passing offense, and I think we've kind of shown that for the first four games,"Medina said. "Being able to have that run-pass balance can really make us a tough team to beat. "All the skilled guys do a great job getting to where they are supposed to be and catching the ball." The Chargers have outscored Firelands, St. Paul, Gibsonburg and Berkshire by a combined 181-37 margin. "Our coach said the teams in 2015 and 2016 that made the Final Four averaged 38 points per game," Medina said. "So in our eyes, that's where we want to be. That's just our goal every game." After Berkshire (1-3) failed to connect on a 35-yard field goal attempt on the game's opening drive, Edison wasted little time. Medina scored on runs of 32 and 14, which sandwiched a 33-yard scoring strike to fullback Bryson Wittmer as the Chargers led 20-0 after one quarter. After Davin Wendt intercepted a pass and returned it to the Berkshire 10, Medina found Grayson Smith to cover that distance for a second TD pass and a 26-0 lead just 41 seconds into the second quarter. After getting a stop, Medina then found another running back in the flat, as Luke Blatnik cut up the left side of the field and turned it into a 51-yard pass-and-catch TD. Wittmer scored the conversion for a 34-0 lead with 9:30 left in the first half. Berkshire's Cameron Beam returned the ensuing kickoff 78 yards for a touchdown, but there was no slowing the Chargers. Medina found Wittmer for a 25-yard TD pass at the 6:42 mark, then after a second Berkshire TD, Wittmer returned the ensuing kickoff 90 yards for a score and a 48-13 lead a the 3:23 mark of the second. Leading 48-19 at halftime, Edison got two scores in the second half. Cy Finnen capped an 11-play, 66-yard scoring drive with an 18-yard run at the 7:19 mark of the third. The second of three Alex Davidson extra points made it 55-19. With the clock running and the reserves in the game, Edison's Caden Clare scored from a yard out with 11:29 left to cap the scoring. In all, six different players scored the nine TDs for Edison. "The whole objective is to try and use all the talent that we have, and we're blessed to have some," Edison head coach Hall said. "We try to use it all so teams are forced to defend it all. A lot of credit goes to the guys up front, too. "We're using several different schemes and they are picking it up and executing it. We told the guys that it's a process and we're getting better every week. We'll try and play a game even better then this and put our best foot forward." Medina finished the game 11-of-14 passing for 225 yards and the four scores. He ran 11 times for 125 yards and two TDs. Finnen added 63 yards on just six attempts. Smith caught six passes for 89 yards and a TD. Still one week away from SBC Bay Division play, the Chargers host Norwalk (2-2) in another longtime area rivalry next Friday. "Things are going well, but as a coach, you tell yourself that doesn't help you next week," Hall said. "We still have to find ways to keep improving and getting better."
