S.C., Plymouth, Edison pick up non-league wins

GREENWICH — Derek Fisher's first head coaching win was a memorable one. The first-year South Central football coach watched his team score 67 straight points through just the first two quarters in Friday's 73-6 win over Fremont St. Joseph Central Catholic. The non-league win over the Crimson Streaks improved the Trojans to 1-2 overall entering a fourth straight non-league game at Vermilion (2-1) on Sept. 8. Trojans quarterback Aaron Hauler ran for touchdowns of 36, 66 and 56 yards, respectively, as he totaled 147 yards in the game on just seven rush attempts. He was also 9-of-10 passing for 179 yards and 2 TDs through the air. Backfield mate Gunner Ray also had a big game, rushing for 183 yards on just five attempts. Ray scored three touchdowns. South Central led 30-0 after one quarter and with a 67-0 at the half. Eric Sanders had two interceptions on defense, and Hauler added one. Leading 67-6 after the Streaks found the end zone, the Trojans closed out the scoring on a 16-yard run by Cole Frankart. Frankart caught three passes for 88 yards, while Hayden Dobias had five catches for 66 yards. South Central totaled 582 yards of offense, including 309 rushing and 183 passing. Plymouth 20, Wellington 14 PLYMOUTH — The Plymouth defense forced a late turnover, then scored with under 90 seconds left for a 20-14 win over Wellington on Friday in a non-league game at Alumni Field. With the win, the Big Red improved to 2-1 entering next week's Firelands Conference opener vs. Western Reserve. It marks the sixth straight year that Plymouth has been either 2-1 or 3-0 to start a season. Layne Bushey opened the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown run, then ran in the conversion for an 8-0 lead at the 2:17 mark of the first quarter. The Dukes responded with a scoring drive that was capped by an 8-yard TD pass from Landon Wright to Nolan Sasack, but the 2-point try failed to leave Plymouth ahead, 8-6, with 11:47 left in the second quarter. Plymouth went back ahead on a 3-yard run by Ben Trimmer, though the run failed for a 14-6 lead with 3:29 left in the first half. Both teams played to a scoreless third quarter. The Dukes scored on a 10-yard run by Sasack at the 9:22 mark of the fourth quarter, and the 2-point run by Devan Diedrick allowed the Dukes to tie the game. Wellington had the ball late trying to break the tie, but put the ball on the ground and the Big Red recovered. Faced with a fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line with under two minutes remaining, Plymouth's Eli Keefe pushed across and into the end zone with 1:28 left. The conversion run failed, but the defense held off the Dukes in the final minute for the victory. Plymouth ran 45 times for 266 yards in the win, led by Bushey with 126 yards on 20 attempts. Ethan Keefe ran nine times for 81 yards, while Eli Keefe added 41 yards on 10 rushes. Edison has outscored its three opponents, 119-18. The Chargers got touchdown runs of 6, 27 and 10 yards, respectively, from running back Cy Finnen in the victory. Marcus Medina added a 4-yard TD run, and also threw TD passes of 12 and 17 yards to Grayson Smith and Abe Hermes. The Chargers host a new opponent in Week 4, Burton Berkshire (1-2) out of Geauga County east of Cleveland. Vermilion (2-1) led 14-0 early in the second quarter after a 10-yard run by Logan Peterson, and a 14-yard TD pass from AJ Mathis to Cohen Mooney. Willard (2-1) cut the lead to 14-7, however, the Sailors answered on a Evan Kuhns 1-yard run to make it 21-7. The Flashes took the ensuing kickoff deep into Sailor territory and scored to cut the lead to 21-14. Needing a stop, Willard was unable to do so as the Sailors had another successful drive capped on another 1-yard TD run by Kuhns. Leading 28-14 at halftime, the Sailors got a 4-yard run by Peterson on the fist drive of the second half to extend the lead to 21 points. After recovering a Willard fumble, Mathis scored on a 4-yard run to put the game out of reach at 42-14 through three quarters. The Flashes scored on a TD pass with nine minutes left, but Kuhns closed out the scoring on a 39-yard run. Vermilion totaled 534 yards rushing in the win, with Kuhn carrying 25 times for 204 yards and 3 TDs. Willard is back in action on Friday when it hosts Woodmore (1-2) in the SBC River Division opener.
