Big day to wrap up Huron County Fair

NORWALK — The Huron County Large Animal Sale is one of the highlights of the last day of Fair Week, when exhibitors of cows, hogs and lambs sell their animals. Roger Hunker and Don Sweeting auctioneer the event. The bidders at the sale are usually businesses or individuals who want to help the exhibitors, as well as generate goodwill in the community. The youngsters receive not only the amount bid for each animal but also its market value, which reimburses them for the time, energy and money that have gone into the livestock. All the numbers in this article are bid prices only. Dairy cross feeder calves started the sale with Eva Martin's Grand Champion bringing $1,000 and Hagen Adams' Reserve Champ bringing $950. The Grand Champ dairy feeder calf was owned by Macy Rickel and brought $1,000, and the Reserve owned by Hagen Adams brought $950. In the market hog category, Ethan Linder's Grand Champ barrow/Grand Champ market hog sold for $1,000, and Nash Feichtner's Grand Champ gilt/Reserve Champ market hog sold for $2,400. A price of $800 went to Olivia Whetstone for the Grand Champ barrow carcass on rail. A price of $650 went to Brynlee Porter for the Grand Champ barrow carcass on foot and Reserve Champ for the barrow carcass on rail. The Grand Champ market beef belonged to Neill Tyler and made $4,100. The Reserve belonged to Mason Kinney and made $3,500. Wyatt Wolery owned the Champion beef carcass and made $700, and Julia VerBurg's Reserve made $750. The price for Macie Minniear's Grand Champ dairy steer was $1,600, and the price for Hagen Adams Reserve was $1,000. Arla Beard's Dairy Supreme Champ earned $900, and Dalton Knoll's Reserve earned $1,500. The owner of the Overall Grand Champ Market Lamb, as well as Premier Sheep Exhibitor, was Brett Martin, whose animal sold for $1,400. Emily Stevens owned the Reserve that sold for $1,000. Beef feeder calves ended the sale, with Morgan Neill's Grand Champ selling for $1,000, and Raegan Schafer's Reserve selling for $1,600. Entire families are often involved in the fair in one way or another and the Kimberlin's are a good example. Sister Isabella, a sophomore at South Central High School, and brother Marson, a senior, are long-time members of the Tri-County Bits & Pieces 4-H Club. They were in several events involving pigs, which comes naturally to them because their family raises the animals and their father BJ is the pig barn superintendent. Also, he and their mother Jennifer are in charge of the Tri-Community Buyer's Group. Although they are involved with school and their animals right now, they both have decided on careers. Marson has been training to become a welder once he graduates and Isabella is interested in a career in dental hygiene. The quilt made by the members of the Ag Heritage sold for $500, with part of that going back to the society and the rest to the Junior Fair.
