Police release statement, 911 calls

NORWALK — Police have released more information about the shooting death of a pregnant 31-year-old at the hands of her 2-year-old son. Here is the police department's press release in its entirety: On June 16, 2023, at 1:11 pm EST the Norwalk Police Department received a 911 call from Laura Ilg (age 31 of Norwalk) stating she was shot in the back by her two-year-old son at 59 Woodlawn Avenue in the city of Norwalk. Mrs. Ilg also informed the dispatcher she was thirty-three (33) weeks pregnant. Several seconds later, her husband, Alex Ilg (age 28 of Norwalk), called 911 stating he received a phone call from his wife "screaming something about my son and needing to call 911." Officers with the Norwalk Police Department arrived on scene at 1:14 pm EST and forced entry into the residence through a locked front door. Laura and her two-year-old son were found in the upstairs master bedroom, along with a Sig Sauer P365 Nitro Micro-Compact Semi-automatic pistol. Officers removed the two year-old son from the room at the request of Laura and began rendering aid to her. During this, Laura was fully conscious and gave officers a complete account of the events that occurred. These statements were captured on officer's body-worn cameras. Alex later arrived on scene after leaving work. The Norwalk Fire Department arrived on scene at 1:16 PM EST, followed shortly after by paramedics with North Central EMS. Laura was transported to Fisher Titus Medical Center, where an emergency caesarean section took place. Laura's unborn son was pronounced deceased at approximately 2:08 pm EST. Laura was later pronounced deceased at approximately 5:10 pm EST. The Sig Sauer P365 Nitro Micro-Compact Semi-automatic pistol, along with a spent shell casing, were seized during the initial investigation by responding officers. The pistol's magazine was loaded with an additional 12 rounds. The Norwalk Police Department's Detective Bureau later executed a search warrant at the residence. Along with observing numerous child safety features, such as safety gates at almost every doorway and child locks on all accessible draws, detectives seized an additional loaded twelve (12) round magazine for the Sig Sauer P365 Nitro Micro-Compact Semi-automatic pistol from a nightstand in a bedroom. This is the location where both Alex and Laura stated the firearm was kept. Additionally, a Mossberg 12-gauge shotgun with six rounds in the tube was seized from the closet in the master bedroom and a Colt M4A1 Carbine AirSoft Rifle was also seized (from) a computer room for safe keeping. This is an open and ongoing investigation as additional evidence, such as results from tests on the functionality of the Sig Sauer P365 Nitro Micro-Compact Semi-automatic pistol are pending. No charges have been filed at this time and the case will be forwarded to the Huron County Prosecutor's Office.
