Firefighters help contain latex spill

NORWALK — Norwalk firefighters responded to a latex container spill Monday morning. Firefighters got a report about 7:30 a.m. from Goodlevel Enterprises LLC, 55 Newton St., about the spill. Upon arrival, according to a report from the NFD and chief Dan Strayer, firefighters discovered a very large spill — about 6,000 gallons of the natural latex product named Formulatex LRN. The spill, according to the report, occurred due to an accidental failure of the shipping bladder while the freight company was delivering and unloading the product. The spill was contained through the cooperative effort of the company, NFD, Norwalk city General Services and the Huron County EMA. A temporary dam was built using hazardous material containment booms and sand to prevent further contamination of the storm sewer system. A clean-up contractor responded and will be cleaning the product from the storm sewers as well as the spill site. According to the chemical safety data sheet, the NFD report said, the product poses no threat to the environment of health if handled and cleaned up properly. The Ohio EPA responded to assist with scene mitigation and investigation.
