Edison's Williams wins regional long jump

LEXINGTON — Edison junior Trayvon Williams is headed to the Division II state championship meet next weekend. The track and field standout also has the chance to qualify in multiple events following Thursday's regional championship meet at Lexington High School. Williams won the long jump competition with a top effort of 21-feet-1 inch, and had sixth-fastest time in the preliminary race of the 200-meter dash, and the seventh-fastest time in the 100-meter dash. In the 200, his time of 22.36 seconds advanced him to Saturday's running finals. His time of 11.42 seconds in the 100 also put him in the running finals of the event, where the top four placers also qualify for state. Williams failed on his first two long jump attempts on Thursday. Entering his sixth and final jump, Williams was also in second place behind Columbus Eastmoor Academy's Donovan Delph. However, Williams saved his best distance for last to win the event on his final jump. Williams will run at 12:42 p.m. on Saturday in the 100-dash finals, and at 2:10 p.m. in the 200. Also on Thursday, the Edison girls 4x400-meter relay also qualified for Saturday's final. The Chargers' Maylie Weilnau, Zoey Corfman, Peyton Facemire and Ingrid Berckmueller earned the eighth and final qualifying spot in 4:11.21. That quartet will return at for the 2:45 p.m. finals on Saturday. The 4x200 relay team of Weilnau, Corfman, Tannah Vitaz and Berckmueller also placed 14th in 1:50.58 on Thursday. The state championships will again be held at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on the campus of Ohio State University in Columbus on June 2-3. Div. III regional concludes Friday HEATH — Area Firelands Conference athletes will look to earn their state championship meet spots on Friday at the Heath High School regional. In field events, New London's Kaitlyn Gum, already qualified in the shot put, will compete in the discus along with Western Reserve's Katie Woodruff. South Central's Angela Williams is in the long jump, while teammate Falynn Schumacher and New London's Raeann Mitchell are in the pole vault. In boys field events, Plymouth's Layne Bushey will compete in the high jump, and Conner Byrd is in the shot put field. Among those who have qualified for tonight's running finals are South Central's Grace Lamoreaux and New London's Madison Smith in both the 100-meter and 300 hurdles. New London's Reese Landis will also double up in the 1600 and 3200 distance runs. In other sprints, Western Reserve's Libby Weisenberger is in the 100 and South Central's Williams is in the 200. St. Paul's Adele Dowdell will run the 800. In girls relays, Western Reserve is in the 4x100, while South Central is in the 4x200 and St. Paul runs in the 4x400. In boys running finals, St. Paul's Ian Deeter will run both the 1600 and 3200. New London's Jalen Randleman also will run the two-mile. Among the sprints, Plymouth's Caiden Allen and St. Paul's Brady Daley are in the 100, while Plymouth's Riley Ramey is in the 200. Both New London's Gavin Carruthers and Western Reserve's Sean Murdock are in the 800. Among relays, St. Paul has a quartet in the 4x200 and 4x400, while Plymouth is in the 4x100. Field events will get underway at 4 p.m. Friday, followed by running finals at 5:30 p.m.
