Norwalk girls 4x800 wins district title

FINDLAY — The dominance of distance events for the Norwalk track and field program continued on Thursday. The 4x800-meter relay girls team kicked off the tournament trail in a big way at the Division I district championship meet at Findlay. The team of Xavi Immel, Summer Moehlman, Isabell Ott and Zuri Immel finished with a time of 9:51.01, which was 15 seconds ahead of the second-place team from host Findlay. The top four placers in each event at Findlay qualifies to the regionals at Amherst High School, slated for May 24 and May 26 next week. The remainder of the field events and running finals will resume Saturday morning back at Findlay. At the Div. II Ontario district site, Edison's Trayvon Williams won the long jump to move on to the regional next week at Lexington. His top jump measured 21-feet-7.25 inches. TENNIS Norwalk's season ends PORT CLINTON — Two doubles teams and one singles player from the Norwalk boys tennis team saw their seasons come to an end on Thursday at the Division I district championship tournament at Port Clinton High School. "It was really nice to get five guys into the district," Norwalk head coach Ray Scheid said. "That in itself is quite an accomplishment for a team." The first doubles team of seniors Bryan Sommers and Ashton Coe lost in the opening round to Sylvania Southview's Kayshov Agnihortri and Pranav Dixit by scores of 6-3, 7-5. The second doubles team of senior Josh Newhouse and junior Ethan Brown also lost in the first round to Sylvania Northview's Alex Kasee and Shane Kagy (6-2, 6-4). "The doubles teams both had difficult opponents to contend with today," Scheid said. "Even though the scores may not reflect it, both teams played really well. Coe and Sommers were within a few points of pushing their match into the third set, but fell just short. "Brown and Newhouse had some extraordinary games and played some of their best tennis this year," he added. "I'm looking forward to seeing Ethan improve even more going into his senior year." In singles play, Norwalk junior Drew Thomas fell to Wapakoneta's Aiden Bellman in two sets, 6-2, 6-3. "Drew had a bit of a slow start and had to battle from behind, but still played well," Scheid said. "It will be good experience for him going into next season." BASEBALL Seneca East 2, Plymouth 1 ATTICA — The Big Red saw their season come to an end on Thursday, as they just missed an upset win over the host Tigers in a Division IV sectional championship game. Plymouth (8-16) was trailing 2-0 and on the verge of being no-hit entering the top of the seventh. Canaan Slone reached on a dropped third strike. He was at third base with two outs when Shae Sparks singled him home for the 2-1 deficit. Sparks reached third when Jarrett Burrer followed with a single, but Seneca East ace Caden Fritz was able to get a ground ball out to seal the win. Trace McVey pitched six innings for the Big Red. Dominic Dymond was 3 for 3 with a double and two RBIs, and Carson Smith was 2 for 3 with three RBIs for Edison (19-3, 10-2) — ranked No. 9 in the latest Division III state coaches poll. Also for the Chargers, Marcus Medina singled twice and drove in two runs, while Aiden Drake was 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI. Blake Simon threw five innings, allowing an unearned run on two hits with eight strikeouts. Edison entertains Northwood at 5 p.m. Friday in a Div. III sectional title game. Edison 701 41 — 13 14 1 P.
